I have a large pen for my ducks, even though they free range during the day Around our lake, the pen has always been muddy, I just couldn’t imagine my hens being in it, but they’re brahmas, strictly not allowed ‘near’ mud, as mud balls can build up between their toes causing discomfort and damaging the foot feathers.

All in one pen ? How big is your pen ? I’ve never even thought about keeping my ducks penned in with my chickens.
Ducks are extremely messy. Some mud pit that must be in winter.

They were just free ranging in my yard together for a little while this evening. The ducks stay out most of the time and I let individual pens of chickens out at different times.

Yea my duck pen has zero grass.

What would happen if we got rid of the two drakes and just kept the female duck? As someone mentioned earlier, if ducks and chickens are brooded together, the ducks can be confused about what they actually are. Our female duck definitely thinks she’s a chicken. She goes into the top part of our coop at night (where the chickens sleep) and the other two ducks stay on the bottom part. She’s always hanging around with the chickens instead of the drakes, as well. Would she get too lonely being the only duck, even though she doesn’t know she’s a duck?
