Our duck is mounting our chicken

@TSOWOATNKC that theory makes sense. They were all brooded together, and have been raised together.

And that’s a huge problem!
You’ll have to keep your hens and ducks separate! At least until you can get more to keep your ‘drake’s’ occupied.

@casportpony we have only noticed it once (yesterday), right when we let them out to free range. I'm not sure where we would get more females that aren't babies.

You may have to ‘consider’ getting ducklings then. Otherwise keep your drake and ducks separated from your hens!

Getting more is ‘optional’, if you want the ducks to free roam with the chickens without ending up with bare backed hens, you may aswell ‘consider’ getting more ducks.

‘Depending’ on the ‘size’ of your run, you could also just have them ‘penned’ in. No worries and no hassle.

Even if you do get more ducks, it is not ‘definite’ that this behavior will stop.

@Golden Brahma 64 we know that. We originally had one drake pekin and one female khaki campbell, but acquired a second pekin drake from friends as he would've been fox food otherwise. They have been free ranging since noon, and everything seems to be fine. We checked out the chicken he was trying to mate, and she seems perfectly fine, but obviously we don't want it to escalate. That's why we're looking for more females to add.

Does anyone have suggestions on where to get started ducks? I'm going to check craigslist, but I don't even know where else to look...

If you are on Facebook, you might check some local poultry swap groups?
Also check your state thread (and neighboring states if applicable) here on BYC, and the buy/sale/trade listings too!

Some of my chickens and ducks hanging out this evening.

There’s an online hatchery that sometimes has juvenile ducks. I can’t recall who off the top of my head.

I’d check Craigslist for your surrounding area. Depending upon where you are, you may have to go out of state, or drive a fair distance. Even spent duck hens would be a good addition. They just need be female.
