Our Egg Hatching thread! Hatch: Nov. 7th (Hatching Video PG 57)

I'm not sure what I am gonna try for a hatcher this time. All of mine are due the 6th/7th but two. I tried using my homemade hatcher this last time and both my silkie eggs died. Don't want to try it again with these eggs. I may just take them all out of the turner and raise the humidity up. The other two eggs are serama mix and it is my understanding they should be incubated at a higher humidity anyway. My biggest concern is the fact they will only be on day 10/11 and need to be turned.

Any suggestions?

I'm glad I did the brooder correctly. I'm relying heavily on everyone's knowledge here on the boards via skimming through older threads, so don't think I'm doing this all of my own accord. Many of the awesome posters of this forum have been (unknowingly) helping me.

I can't believe by Friday/Saturday, I'm gonna be a "chicken-mama".

pbjmaker, I'm just leaving mine in the incubator to hatch. And I am adding a warm wet sponge to up the humidity. I may do a little higher than most (probably to around 75%) because the air cells in my eggs seemed a bit larger and abnormally shaped than all of the charts and such I've seen. But I read that happens a lot to shipped eggs, so I'm not overly worried, but I want to make sure they don't get stuck in their shells at hatch either. I don't think I have any worry of them drowning. There wasn't much water rolling around in them at all when I candled last night. I think they are in dire need of the humidity. That first humidity monitor I got was off/low by 18%!

Then I found some cheap $3 ones at Walmart the other day and picked up a bunch so I could verify what was going on in both of my bators.

Time will tell if I'm doing anything right!

My only concern with leaving them in the incubator is the two eggs that aren't due for another week. But I think the higher humidity will be ok for them since they are itty bitty eggs and if the aircell on those get to big it will take up the entire egg.

Some of my air cells are saddle shaped - but I have hatched ones like that before just fine. I will probably be taking mine out of the turner tonight because today is day 18 for about half of them. It won't hurt the ones that were supposed to come out tomorrow.

I usually don't have any trouble getting my humidity up by using sponges. I have used this bator one other time for hatching and it worked just fine. It holds the temp really well - just the humidity seems to drop - but I think it is because the heat in the house has been on and drying out the air. I seem to have to add water about every two days.

Ok since some of my eggs are due the 6th I decided to stop turning the whole batch today. Was gonna wait until tonight - but couldn't.
I'm glad I made the decision to move them now. One of the eggs upon candling showed a tiny beak shape trying to work its way into the air cell!

Maybe I will have a pip by tomorrow

Michiganwoods, I've been peeking in at this thread from time to time and I just had to say.....WOW! Man, you are my idol!! You take absolutely beautiful pics (Candling pics are not easy to get) and know how to work with them in photoshop. You also have such great communication skills with everyone...what's this post #215!! and you've individually answered any and all questions...and your brooder set up is p-e-r-f-e-c-t.

Ditto this comment! Cass, you just seem like you would be a great friend to anyone. I have enjoyed this thread a lot and glad I get to share a hatch day with you all! You all have been great! Good luck to us all and I hope we all get great chicks hatching like crazy in a few short days

So far 16 wheaton marans 2 BC marans and 1 lavender wyandotte still looking good to go. Have my fingers crossed for all sure hope we all are busy running to puter to make good reports.

I'm going to be out all day tomorrow so I opted to take mine off of the auto turner tonight too. 30 minutes later I went in to check... and one of them was already rocking!!

Jamie821, congrats on all the little fuzzies so far! I'm gonna need to have my second batch of eggs identified. No idea what's going to hatch out but tonight I checked and there are 8 eggs with embros growing! Another was infertile. And the puzzler... the huge egg with two yolks is only growing one embryo... can a double yolked egg have only one fertilized yolk?

kodiakchicken, I am too! But more excited than nervous at this point. I figured I did my best and whatever will be will be (kay-serrah-serrah, or however you spell it!).

So, those of you that are stopping the turning, when on the 17th did you actually put your eggs in the bator? I didn't do mine until the evening of the 17th, so I figure I have a full day to go before I stop turning.

It's going to be tough for me once they start because these old Brower incubators only have one tiny little window to see into the bator. How will I know without opening the bator???

2 eggs rocking!

I put mine in super early in the AM, so it was less than 12 hours off from Day 18.

If by some chance I happen to have any of these hatch tomorrow (some hatch early sometimes on day 19, right?)... I'll have to do election-themed naming. Thank GOD all of the political ads will be over tomorrow.
