Our Egg Hatching thread! Hatch: Nov. 7th (Hatching Video PG 57)

it is true what you say but wont do me anygood, The maran eggs I have set are all about six and above on the color scale. On day ten all I am going to be able to see is the air sac. Prob wont see mine till they hatch. Such a long wait

that is a blood ring pretty certain but wait unless ordor or weeping till day 14. The only ones I toss are the totally clear ones before then.If at day ten they are clear then no way are they good.

Wonderful pictures again. That looks like a blood ring to me.
I tossed 3 that had blood ring and 13 that were clear yesterday.
But my kids had to open them and see. It is such a wonderful learning experince for them.

I so agree! I went home and recandled a couple that I had questions on and then just for fun candled one of the one's I knew had an embryo. The little guy was moving all over the place so I called the kids in. My teenage exchange student had a friend over, another exchange student, so all four of us crowded into the laundry room to see. They were amazed!!!

pbjmaker, how strange with the multiple bubbles in your silkie egg! I hope they all hatch out for you!

Jamie, I'll be anxious to see your marans when they hatch.

katrinag, thank you! I decided to toss my clear ones today. There was nothing going on in them at all when I opened them so I doubt they were fertile... or USPS really scrambled them in transit.

I'm fairly certain that the one really is a blood ring. It looks nothing like the other eggs with obvious healthy embryos.

kodiakchicken, mine have been loving this too! They are amazed that there can be little baby birds inside of these round things we normally eat for breakfast.

Edited to add: I decided to get rid of the ones I thought were questionable. Upon cracking open, one was definitely scrambled care of the P.O. and the other two had blood rings with bloody dots in the center. Now I am down to 14 what seem to be healthy eggs with hopping embryos.

Shame on me! I gave in and candled last night (day 6)! I normally wait until day 7, then candle again on day 14, and that's it. I just couldn't stand it last night, so. . . Even with the huge scrambled mess in the box when I opened it (shipped eggs), it looks like several of my New Hampshire Reds are developing. Any bacteria that entered the eggs during shipping may still kill them, but I'm feeling a little more hopeful now that I've seen embryos!!! I also threw in a few of my BBS Orpington eggs just for a test hatch, and it looks like some of them are developing, too. Guess I'd better go out this weekend and make sure my "baby pen" is functioning properly!!

When we first started incubating and hatching, my girls and I would open the eggs that didn't hatch and try to determine (using one of the handy charts) at what stage they died, etc. That way we had some idea what adjustments to make in our incubation conditions to improve our hatch rates. We also spent a lot of time candling and watching the development that way. I'm sure that we handled the eggs too much and undoubtedly contaminated or damaged some of the developing eggs, but in the long run we learned so much, that I think it was worth it. This is such a fascinating hobby!!!!!

Apparently I'm a very bad influence.

But I can't say I am not hungry for all of the candling updates, on my own eggs and everyone else's!

I'm glad to hear that you've got some development! Here's to hoping that the bacteria keeps its distance from the embryos.

I'm curious about the handling them too much. If you have to hand turn the eggs three times a day, how is that any better/worse than candling them once a day? I make sure that I am scrubbing my hands clean and that they are warm and dry before I touch any of the eggs, and I'm quick with the candling process, yet very gentle and not twisting or turning the eggs.

I'm uploading a 30 second video clip to YouTube that shows one of my bouncing embryos. My camera has the video function so I couldn't resist.

I'll post a link to it in a few.

Okay, here's the latest update. (I had to check again - I can't help myself!!!!

)

Two more of the eggs had visable bouncing baby embryos, which brings me to 9 confirmed fertile and growing. 1 more is a definite maybe. Two looked absolutely empty, 1 looked like a bloodring although I'm keeping my fingers crossed

and one looks empty, with an air cell that moves, and when I turned it it had a couple of moisture spots on it. None of the other eggs had moisture on them, so I suspect this egg is weeping. I don't know for sure though. This egg also had calcium deposits on it, the only one.

I'm so excited! Babies! Babies! Babies!

I am loving hearing all of your candling stories. I have to listen to all of yours, Hope my marans are doing as well. I get to see a air cell hopefully in a week. My welsummers due halloween though i can see through. Did my final candling on those last night and boy are they getting big. Not bad on shipped eggs still have 18 of 23 doing great. Will let yall know of my hatch on halloween then we all wait for the 7th together.

I love the first hatches! I candled way too much with my first but I learned alot and I still got chickies!

Good luck to everyone and their babies!!
I have some due on the 6th... I havn't candled yet, I like to only candle once, around day 10-14 ish. I hand turned my first group and always washed my hands. I'm going through trial and error to find out what are the most productive ways to incubating for me. If anyone is interested, I've surmised this:
Eggcarton method seems easier for the chicks to hatch.
Storing the eggs before incubation bottom end up is good.
Having a forced air is better than having a turner
I'm trying dry incubation with this hatch.
Next hach I'm going to try latex gloves when handling eggs.
I've only hatched 3 cluches...so I'm far from an expert. I'm just lucky I get so many eggs from the girls to try it out.

What a wonderful addiction to "suffer" from...lol
