The rooster is kellogg and the girls are sugar smacks. lucky charm etc My wheaton rooster is rhinestone and the eggs in the bator that hatch pullets will have gemstone names like opal . diamond etc, Its easier for my mother to remember lol

kodiakchicken, I hear ya. My husband is on the other end of that. He asked that we keep a few roosters so that the house/land isn't overrun with estrogen here.

Jamie, very cute! My kids could at least remember those names.

If I were to name any of them, I would most likely use Mythological names, or perhaps I'll go book-themed and start with Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, Galadriel, Arwen, Aragorn, Aowen... and maybe Harry, Ron and Hermione will find their way into my flock too.

I feel kinda badly about my thoughts on too many roos. Are any of you guys planning on a similar outcome if you end up with too many roos? What do folk typically do that love to hatch their own eggs when it comes to the gender balance?

the roos I dont keep I sell. I am not or could I kill or eat the ones I hatched. The only stipulation I tell the people that buy them is I dont want to know what they are going to do with them if they dont listen and tell me to eat they dont get them, As long as I dont know I can live with it.

Cass, my husband would like to insist on having more males around the place (out of four people and 15 animals there is only 1 male human and 2 male animals (and I had them neutered - the aniimals, that is!!)) but when it really gets down to it he loves all his girls.

I would love to keep any and all of my roos (and hens), but we live on a half acre with close neighbors. I might keep one if I get a real beautiful blue roo like Halo's Mr. B.

I would consider butchering some of them, if I ended up with a lot of them, but probably not from this hatch, since these are my first eggs and special blue babies.

My intent with this hatch was to keep a couple of them and try to get some of the FFA kids (I'm a non-teacher co-advisor) to take on a few of them as a project. If none of the kids want them and I can't keep all of them, I know a few people in town that are looking to acquire chickens that are very experienced with livestock.

I would love to start raising chicks to sell to people to raise on island. Right now the only way we can get birds is to have them shipped in as chicks.

Sorry to ramble.

I would love to be able to butcher my excess roos. Unfortunately, I can't bring myself to do it, not because I've hatched them, but because I'm pretty squeamish about that kind of stuff. My husband won't do it either, so I have no choice but to sell them. I don't particularly care what the buyers are going to do with them, as long as they are well taken care of. I'm really hoping not to get very many roos from this batch of eggs.

Just wanted to let yall know my other hatch on halloween is pipping. The eighteen welsummers are trying to get out/ Let you know updates have two pipped right now on 19th day

YAY for hatching - Good Luck! I have the humidity stablized in my home- made hatcher but the temp is a little high. I need to move those 2 silkie eggs tomorrow - I set them on the 11th but in the early afternoon so I didn't count day one until the 12th. So technically I am already into day 19.

Congrats Jamie! YAY for hatching and pipping!!

Thanks for everyone's thoughts on the roos. I think I'll be able to "do the deed" when the time comes. I've been fishing since I was 3, and ever since I was a teen, I've been cleaning my own catch. If I can stomach severed fish heads glubbing for air, chickens shouldn't be so bad.

Update on that new batch of eggs I got... There are actually TWO sets of twins. The blue egg, of course (my blue eggs just don't wanna hatch
roll.png
). I doubt they will survive, but I will let it develop and see what happens. I saw two yolk shadows in that huge egg today, and there is enough room in that shell that I just wonder if the twins will hatch from it and survive. And, I see some blood vessels developing! So refrigerated or not, looks like some of them are gonna take! And it looks like the fridge-a-bator is gonna work!

Now you guys have done it! I hads a dream last night about the two surviving silkie eggs that I just put in my kind of stable hatcher. I dreamed I put them in and a blanket off my bed fell in the hatcher and I didn't notice. When I went to check on them the temp was 143. I freaked out and took the blanket out then cried - they will never hatch now! When I turned back around a split second later they had hatched but were already partially grown. One was white and the other one was white with tiny black dots all over.

I need help...
