Our First Broody and Incubator Hatch: a Diary

@BlueBaby
I might secretly name that chick. If it's a pullet it'll be Betsy (Ross), and if it's a boy it'll be Paul (Revere), because it'll be red, white and blue :gig

The chick came out to the big yard for scratch with the flock this morning. Evenings it's been out there too to eat before bed.

I was just sitting on the patio and saw them in the big yard exploring too. It's getting along pretty well and will come over to eat even if I'm still standing near the food now. It definitely knows I bring food too because it comes running when I call.

I'm going to guess that the chick is probably a cockerel. It's got the longest damn legs I have ever seen on a chick in my life!

It's coming out for scratch and food to the big yard every day now. Ruby is still nesting in a box with it at night but I can hear it hollering with everyone else in the morning and it's often first out the door. Nugget, my Welsummer, looks at it with disgust but leaves it alone. She's never going to be broody, I guarantee it. Everyone else is fine so it's joining the flock very easily so far. I had a feeling this would be the result, they're all pretty easy going.

So, you are finally starting to agree with me that it's a boy? Longest leg's? I thought that you seen his daddy when you were over here! :gig The leg's are long on these, and as they mature, the body fill's out.

Is that true with pullets? The long legs I mean.

Yes, the pullets have long leg's too, but not as long as the cockerels do.

My next door neighbor decided to keep one of those extra Breese boy's that I have for a pet, so that one should live!

That's great to hear, glad he has a home.

Well I think my chick is likely a boy, but we could still be wrong. Girls can have the slow feathering gene too. So I'm waiting to see :lol:
