My Coop
We got our day-old chicks back in June and they were ready to get outside in mid-July, we had some friends that were done with their coop and offered it to us so of course we took them up on the offer and off we went.

We started with:

We added some left-over vinyl flooring from my aunt's kitchen reno:

Then we had an old pool liner because I save EVERYTHING, because you know, I'll need it someday! Well today was that day, I lined the roof with it and held it down with pieces of aluminum from an old gazebo that blew down a few years back, wrapped the walls of the nesting boxes, behind the roosting bar, wrapped the wall above the nesting boxes and wrapped the nesting boxes themselves on the outside, they are completely waterproof now.

We got some red and white Behr livestock safe paint from Home Depot and finished the rest:

I trimmed out the door like a barn and added an awning over the vent at the top (which in the end, I didn't need because it is inside the run...but hey, it's looks better anyway haha):

Then it was time to get that thing up on the foundation, so I broke out some more "junk" I had laying around, an old basketball net post, a flagpole holder/pipe and another random piece of pipe I had laying around and used them as rollers to roll it into place:

A little brute force and some tense moments where my wife thought I was going to flip it over haha, and boom, it's in place:

We laid out the frame of the run onto cinder blocks and got it all level and square:

We pre-painted every piece and built the walls, framed out the roof and put metal roofing on:

It wasn't "complete" but it was safe enough for them to be in it while we put the finishing touches on it:

We buried the hardware cloth in the ground about a foot deep all the way around:

Added a roosting bar, and they are pretty happy:

I give you, the "Fluffy Butt Hut":

They have been in it for 2 weeks so far and they are loving it!

Well done! That is such a huge transformation!

I do agree you may want/need more ventilation. I keep a thermometer with humidity gauge in my coop. I aim for being at or within 5% of the outside humidity. If it's at 10% or more above outside humidity it's either time to do a full clean or time to add more ventilation.

Gee, if that's what your first coop looks like, I can't imagine how incredible your NEXT coop will be. And, in my mind, there is ALWAYS a next coop!

Congrats on your thoughtful use of recycled products and the beauty of your overall design!
Thank you, we are incredibly happy with it :) Who knows what the next model will look like :)

Nice upcycle! What's your climate like? You're going to want more ventilation unless you only have 2 or 3 birds in there.
Thank you. We are in Nova Scotia so it's very humid in the summer and quite cold in the winter. I was concerned about ventilation; I may put an exhaust fan in it yet...

You can't see it very well and I don't currently have any better pics of it but in the very first pic on the back (left side in the pic), at the very top there is a gap under the lip of the roof that allows air out, it is the full length of the back wall, it would be directly above their roosting bar inside.

I'm not sure if that is going to be enough or if I'm going to have to install the fan as well.

How big of a gap are we talking? Ventilation should be calculated in sq ft, not inches. Recommended minimum is about 1 sq ft in vent per bird, 24/7, in moderate climates.

Assuming you feel the run is predator proof to your liking, I'd almost want to prop open that clean out door that leads into the coop, for the summertime, as that adds a lot of ventilation in a protected area.
