Its funny how something as simple as getting a free hen can brighten your day(s). I have had a rough time getting pullets/hens since I started getting chickens in May. Lots turned out to be roos and of course it was ones we had already gotten really attached to. So this was a really nice surprise.

It is really cool to be able to come to BYC and share a story like this and know someone will understand. The people we have told about the chicken either laugh at us for bothering to go get a 'dumb' chicken, make jokes about us being chicken rescuers now or just seem indifferent.

Congrats on your rescue - most of my chickens are also rescues. Several came from Animal Control when they had to seize them from a Vietnamese family who didn't understand city law. The immigrant family had 18 chickens in their apartment. County law allowed 4, but not necessarily IN the apartment.

Last week I was leaving the grocery when I heard 2 of the cart-fetching kids talking about the chicken in the parking lot. (My ears perked up.) It seems there had been a chicken out there for a week. The clerks were very concerned because this hen kept darting in between the cars and they were afraid she'd get run over. Several people had chased her but couldn't catch her. No one knew anything about chickens.

I asked the store manager if she'd like me to get the chicken, and she said yes. So I went home, got a cage and net, and waited until the hen roosted in a pine for the night. It wasn't a big deal but still drew a little crowd because none of the onlookers have chickens. The new hen is probably an Aracauna cross. She's was kept separate from the other girls, wormed and checked over closely. She got her freedom in the aviary a couple of days ago and is doing fine. She's very confident and even the roo won't mess with her. What should I name her?

Thanks, I am still shocked that someone called us to get her. I wouldn't mind a bit if there were more to 'save' in my future

Thats great that you were able to rescue so many and now they have a safe home!

Hmmm how bout Skye, Skie or Skyla...the girl versions of Skyler, which means fugitive

Or maybe Charm or Kharma?

Deb, I can't believe I overlooked this post! I am so glad that you rescued her. She could have seriously gotten hurt. Does she act broody?

All my white girls have names that reflect the color. There's Snowflake, Snowball (RIP), Pearl, Opal, Linen, Cotton, Cloud, and I have a Diamond also!

That's so nice of you to rescue the sweet little Silkie. For several years I was the "Chicken Rescue Person" for the Humane Society. I had a big old barn with lots of places to roost up high away from predators, and let them free range. I ended up with a lot of roosters

I would get chcikens from school hatching projects and chickens that had been dumped various places. They had a good life on my property. The old barn collapsed several years ago, so I no longer do rescue work. Chickens don't get a lot of respect from most people, but they are God's creatures, and those of us who raise them know that they have personality.

I took the eggs away from her when the guys brought her home. None of them were fertile. I guess the upset of her routine and new home, broke her of the broodiness. She has been getting along great with the other Silkies and Bantams and was dustbathing like crazy yesterday in the sunshine. She seems to be very happy in her new home!

Wow, I am just now seeing this post, but good on you for saving her.

I wish I could get that lucky. We too are having a very hard time finding hens/pullets.
