Our first meat rabbits

Those are the tastiest ones. (smacks lips)
We don't put up with that kind of aggression in our animals so she was likely never gonna be selected for anything but meat, not for kids to pet even if she did stay.

Is it not possible to just put mesh on the bottom like some store bought runs??
You could but I do not recommend it. I know many will disagree but rabbits feet don't have paw pads like dogs and cats, they just have fur and thin skin which is very fragile. Wire can cut into their skin and get infected which sometimes causes sore hocks and bumble foot.

Digging is natural for them and is good as long as you are sure they can't get out.

I can't quite find what I meant but this will give you an idea of what you could do.

Just know New Zealand rabbits are not pets. They are the mammal equivalent of a leghorn and don't enjoy being handled, even if they were messed with since day one
Really? I once had a big New Zealand buck for a pet. I don't know if he enjoyed being handled or not but he tolerated it. He was calm and on occasion I would turn him loose and he would hop around the yard. I think it depends on the individual rabbit.
