Our first Snake Incident

Well, we discovered today that our "ChickenPrison" is not totally Predator proof. We were just beginning to get 11 eggs a day.
Only 5 today.
Found 6' long black snake with at least two whole eggs inside it on top of nesting box.
We had a foot and a half high of "wood pecker" wire wrapped around the bottom of the dog kennel and chicken wire wrapped everywhere else and this snake still found its way in.
Happy it did nothing to the chickens. Disappointed that it got the eggs.
Those chickens love to peck at me. I can't understand why they didn't attack that snake. I know I would have been happier finding his half-eaten carcuss on the ground of the pen.

so true Chickenprison,

sometime back someone on BYC posted how they used one of those minnow catching traps, if you are familiar with them, baited with an egg, and trapped snake(s) that could crawl in but not crawl out. I thought it was a pretty ingenious idea.
