Hello all!

While we were cleaning the hen house and feeding today, I noticed that a hen had a long piece of tarp string in her mouth. Apparently, the tarp we had over the run had tattered and she pulled a piece into the run and ate it. At any rate, I tried to gently pull the sting out, but it seemed "stuck" and she squawked very loudly. I was afraid of causing injury, so I cut the string as close to her beak as possible. I am worried that this might cause a blockage in her crop. Is it possible for the tarp string to pass or will we need to do (gulp!) surgery? Thanks for any opinions and advice.

You might try to remove it by having someone else hold her body and gently stretch her neck straight up as far as you can and with her mouth open try to gently pull it out. this position will give the straightest path to the crop.

if that doesn't work i would consult with a vet. I would be concerned it will ball up & get impacated somewhere in the digestive system.
