Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

I've been watching for posts - not use to this thread being so quiet. Cute pics! Love the one with the two chicks watching the same spot in the grass. Ben, I have Daisy and Solomon separated from the flock. I'm collecting eggs next week and warming up the DYI incubater the following weekend. I'm planning on setting just a super small group...like six...if I can resist adding eggs from others. Wish I could get some pures from her with Bruno in the same hatch but that seems unlikely. How are Sav and his girls getting along? Any new layers?

Good luck!
I am going to set my first-ever hatch this weekend. I'm still trying to find salmon favs though

Thanks Lindz! Salmon favs are so worth the search :)
Oz, for 15 years I've been ammending our garden "sand" trying to make a nice garden, with not very pleasing results. Nothing seemed to make much difference except cow manure and even that was short lived - and what a mess of weeds that brought in. We live in the pines and have very dry acidic sandy soil. Since we got chickens a few years ago and started adding their contributions to the compost, I saw a huge improvement. Can't wait to till it again- when the ground thaws of course. First day of spring here, finally! Maybe it'll stop snowing soon.

I am probably going to have to break down and order some hatching eggs....

We are hoping to start our garden this weekend if the weather cooperates.

We can usually start ours right after Memorial Day. That's usually our last frost, but greens and carrots get planted as soon as we can rotatil. If I had Bruno and Daisy together I would gladly send ya some eggs! I've had both good and bad luck hatching shipped eggs.

It wouldn't hurt my feelings if you did!

I've not hatched any eggs before except under a broody, and I really would hate to pay a bunch of money and screw it up! So, my first hatch is going to be just my eggs I think!

I'll let ya know when I separate them together for eggs this spring/summer! Of course I will have to check fertility, which means incubating some (lol, any excuse) Since I only have one female I wouldn't be able to send a lot and still have them be fresh, but they'd be cheap!

Where is everyone? This thread has been quiet for awhile!

Hi all, yes I have been quiet. Been pretty busy yet not had a great deal to share on teh chicken front. I log in everyday and move about my regular threads, just not had much to post.

All is well, Rosie seems fine, our concerns with her wobbly crop seems not to be a big deal. Since she became a hen she has started to drop a few feathers in a second sort of mini molt. She has gone off laying again but seems healthy. SHe has separated from her BR chicks, but all is well.

We also have Cleo (LS) and Curly (BV) in molt, so they are off laying, but Laverne (LavARA) has just come back into laying. We get anywhere from 0-4 eggs a day at the moment.

I also goofed up a while back, and only just figured it out. WHen we sold a heap of birds, we sold a SPW quite cheap, as she had not been laying for us. I thought I kept the laying girl who was molting at the time. Well, I didn't double check and sold the giril who was laying hahahaha. The remaining SPW has never laid (yes, crazy as she is 47 weeks old!) I never thought to check her pelvis and she is still very arrow, about 1.5 fingers wide. So it seems I kept a beautiful eating garden ornament, and sold the producer. Oh well.

i'm still checking in
Me too, I visit your thread and the others everyday too.

I have had a heap on, work has been flat out, I also was out running and had an idea blind side me for work, so I have been putting some effort into that which has also ate up some time. If anyone knows someone that works for Yahoo or Google let me know hahahahaha

A couple of days ago our youngest son went in for a minor surgery, so we have also been busy with him. All is well and he is healing up just perfect but it was a taxing time.

Good luck with the next hatch....going to just make a birthday present for yourself Pam....what a coincidence! I will be running my very first Ultra Marathon race that day (here will be the next day, but will be your birthday your time!)

We are expecting two of our newer girls to start laying any day now. of the six girls we kept, the FWM and Wellie are close, the Olive egger and SFAV are some way off, and the BR's are about 6 weeks younger, but I think they might come into lay close together.

Good luck, it's a very exciting thing to do. Feel free to drop in anytime if you want to pick our brains.
here is a picture of my latest egg

an egg tomato lol

It has been an endevour but we finally have a garden!!
Nice, I have been following your garden progress. We have two tomato bushes on the go now, and they are both doing nicely for us. I just love walking out the back and grabbing something from the garden to eat or add into my cooking. Very satisfying, same feeling as frying up an egg the day your girls laid it.

I think it's all in the sand. We have shocking stuff here, but the right stuff added makes it a good ecosystem.

Chicken bedding, poo, I also make liquid fertiliser that goes on diluted from time to time. We have a worm farm that makes 'worm wee' that our mint just goes berserk over and yesterday I added the first lot of casting to the bed. I will get a pic next time I am in the yard. It's booming!

Your first day of spring, we just got out first rains of Autumn, I can hear the lawn drinking it in from here!
