Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

subscribing! Hello everyone! I have read up to a point in your journey, but I suffer from way too many thread syndrome add that to my chicken addiction and we have a true problem. I will start again in reading, oz said some of you could help with the breed of faverolle? My husband ordered some and I set eggs yesterday and I know nothing of the breed! I will put them in our layer pen under our CCL roosters. They are Blue Salmon Favs. Thanks for your help!

all of it, but I will!!!!

HI Sally. I am a fan, and read much of your info.

We have just one pair of Salmon Fav's (and our rooster is far from standard) but we love them all the same. About the only point I hear often is how quiet they are.....our seem to go against the grain there as they mature lol.

Nova and Wrightsx4 both have much more experience than I.

Welcome to our little patch of world, in Perth, West Oz.

Hi Sally, that's hilarious !

Hi Sally! FYI your assisted hatch step by step is awesome.
You will love faverolles - they're so sweet and friendly. Mine are very talkative, even the roosters. Not loud, just chatty.

Hi Wrightsx4! I am glad it could be helpful, thanks!

I hope so, they are very pretty! I love talkative chickens, my white faced spanish is a talker, but he is more a talker because he gets mad

when his hens come to me. our Barred Rock are very verbal hens as well. Brahma are fairly quiet as are the Legbar. Serama talk to our daughter but not much to me unless I call them late for dinner.

I am wondering at the size of them. I just read that they are timid and can get picked on. I pray not!

Honestly I've never weighed mine for size, but my male favs are huge bodied with shorter legs. They're bulkier than my other breed roosters (RIR,EE,various Marans), but a lot of it is feathers. My females have been the same overall size as my wheaten marans, shorter legs though. Smaller than the australorps and buff orps, but fluffy like them. If that helps? Lol. Mine have been timid but get along with the others fine. They certainly don't look for trouble, they avoid the bossier ones pretty well. I think it depends how many favs you have compared to others they're housed with.

you described them well with size! Thank you! So its probably best to keep 4 than 2 just so they can have their gang right? Can you easily tell male from female? and when does this show, I pray not like my Spitz as they took forever to tell male from female!!

I'd keep four or a couple dozen, lol. You'll enjoy them. Males and females show gender by two weeks. My last hatch I was in denial until about 4wks because I had only 1 pullet out of 7. I kept thinking the more messy colored ones must be girls. Nope. At two weeks if you see black anywhere, then figure they're boys, especially on the chest or legs. Females have cream chests and leg feathers.
