Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Thanks team.

Yeah, I am growing confident the silkie is a male, I just like it too much, actually the whole family do.

In new news, Luna the BA, last to start her molt has been spotted in the nest boxes. She may have already finished laying!

As a bonus for Scott, I got one of the Rock sisters 'weird honking' type egg song on video, and the cream on the cake just at the end of the video, Luna jumps down from a perch and joins in with her 'weird moaning' egg song. Only think missing is a normal sounding chicken hahahaha

I will need to get the video off my phone, and then upload to Youtube so there will be a delay, but I do have it now!

Sorry Scott, not yet uploaded that video for you.

I was home by myself for a little while this afternoon, the sun was shining and I would put some old wire mesh to good use and make a small extension to the chick run.

I got the watch the two bigger boys run, jump and chest bump. I really hope I am wrong about the silkie, but that big wide comb is screaming cockerel.

6 eggs today, one of the Rocks was in a mood and kept scaring Olive off the nest, so I had to close the coop door and let her lay in peace, that way I could sit in the sunshine in peace, just reflect and enjoy my little slice of bank owned nature.

Olive and her 'not happy Jan' stare.

You know who coming to you know what.

and finally here is the little mesh extension. As an added bonus I will only have to move the run once a day instead of twice.

I also checked on them last night and they have made the progression to roost in the mobile coops roosting bars, instead of just huddling in the corner. Tonight is their last night with the garden light.

As of tomorrow, they are big kids, just need them to gain some size before we look at the flock joining game again.

Big day tomorrow, lots of running to do before 8:30am!

Congratulations Ben! Are you old enough to remember the acts where they put spinning dinner plates on top of long sticks and then run from stick to stick trying to keep them all spinning fast enough to keep them from crashing to the floor? That's what your life is sounding like lately! I hope you enjoy your dinner immensely. The babies look happy and healthy. I hope your brother enjoys the chickens...they really are a strange type of therapy all their own.

Thanks guys.

It is a bit hectic at the moment but things will smooth out before too long. At least it's not all bad, we have some pretty cool stuff happening too like this dinner. I had forgotten all about it during my training this morning, then when I arrived at my destination a heap of people were coming up to me to congratulate me, I had no idea what they were talking about for a minute then "oh yeah!" hahaha

Joanne, I am old enough to know the spinning plate routine, I am trying to think of my time as the one with the spinning basketballs, same routine, but if one falls at least it bounces!

Good morning all!!!!

Let the drum roll begin......

At 72 weeks of age, FINALLY, Amy the silver pencilled Wyandotte laid her first egg!

I know right! Amazing.

We could hear a different egg song and we found her in the nest box, not long later this gem was left behind. Pic includes one of Luna's 'Lun-pedo's'

She can stay hahahaha

Congrats to Amy!!
Now the question is how much time will it take for her to start a normal laying cycle? I have a hen that is well over a year old and has not laid more then 15 eggs. I trap nest our pullets to check for egg color, and she has been a permanent resident of one of the bigger kennels until now. She will be stew soon, will not even act like a broody.

Good Luck Ben!!
