Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

OK, that time of week, UPDATE time! Even got to play doctor this afternoon (Oz..look away lol)

So, for those playing along at home, Lucky, our LS Roo (who I swear had his first attempt at a crow the other day) had split his upper beak, right hand side.

After reading up on it, seems the most common repair is as Nova says, trim, file and glue. We got as far as the trim and file and we will see how it holds up over the next few days.

I used some good nail clippers and a small smooth file to tidy up any burrs. It is a living, growing part of them, like our finger nails so caution is needed, they have feeling in their beaks. This was pretty small and seemed more like a hang nail trim.

Covered his eye while my wonderful assistant held him firm, then a simple two clips.

Then, just covered his eyes and held his head as steady as possible and took off any sharp edges.

and now we will keep an eye on him and make sure it does not travel further up.

Here are the rest of the gang, now 9 weeks old home grown birdies!

Milo is starting to sport some real nice dark colours, hard to see in the photo but they look cool in the sun.

This shows one of our little miss's....jealous girl she is. Riley was having a pat and Luna just had to get involved somehow!

Finally for this post, the new bedding I got the other day. A hemp flax material, was $20 cheaper than the pine shaving block, and about the same volume.

Finally, I made another scoop too from the milk bottles, drilled a heap of holes in the base to use as a super pooper scooper sift to speed up the coop sand clean outs. Works well but no images of that one.

Another post coming shortly of the 4 week olds.

Now the babies! Again a few shots, no new news with them, we try get them outside as much as possible, no heat during the day as we are starting to ween them off it.

Ever open the coop door and you get that feeling that everyone is watching you?

This is Amy Wyandotte, Digging in.

"You wot m8!" Such a boy already, all three 'lorps carry on like this.

This is Jewel

The two BV's, we really hoped they would both by pullets, but every day that passes that hope dims. The one on the left weighs a TON!

Same BV......no hope for a her lol

"Please sir, may I have some more?"

With my best NY accent "I'm walkin ova 'ere!"

The best shot I got with Baby in it, 'she' is center shot , with the yellow legs.

So that's it for tonight I think, stay tuned for more updates at the end of the week, and no doubt during too!

Cheers, Ben, Alicia and the kids.

Good morning! Tried to post yesterday but had technical difficulties I guess - could read but not post. So anyway- good job Ben on the beak repair, adorable pics & captions, yay Nova!

Picture time. I took these with my cell phone and a flashlight. LOL Anyway, even have one of a white jap bant in the process of hatching! This has been such a cool xperience the last few hours. Jace was even late for school cuz we were watching them pop out like pop corn this morning.

NOT ONLY THAT! BUT, one of the ones I marked as a possible quiter, hatched. Its black with black feet. One of the polish is out also. There are several more pipped including another on the quits side. So glad I didn't toss them on day 18 and marked them instead. That would have been awful.
