Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Sadly this morning on my rounds i found the blue out from under Rosie this morning, it had died during the night in the doorway of the rooster box. The other two are fine and with Rosie, they even left the nest for some grass time this morning.

We are just not meant to have a blue Australorp pullet.

So sorry to hear this

Very sorry for your loss.
We had very bad luck with our blues when we started as well so don't be disheartened. It has taken us several years to get a flock consisting of just 5 blues. It is a long process but worth it in the end.

Would just like to say that you are an inspiration Ben. I will continue to follow your journey.

Sorry to hear about your little blue chick not making it

If you can get your hands on a few basic materials, make them a garden box. I started with grass, but also threw wheat and sunflower seeds in there, now who knows what grows in there, but they get some greens without moonscaping all of it.

We had a 3mx3m garden shed where this pic was taken from, so the original bed was up against the side of it. This one is smaller than I would have liked, we had to extend the run due to chicken math. If I find some more timber to suit I would make another.

The timber has some wire stapled to it so it's harder for them to tunnel under it, couple of screws or pegs to keep it there. I had this bit of pool fence I cut to size then just zip tied some finer wire to. If they can reach it they eat it, but the roots stay intact. Could make it as big as your materials allow.

Our currently has buffalo and a few flat weeds in there, I water it about once a week.
Great idea, we have plenty of that gauge mesh and wire lying around and loads of offcut timbers. Mmmmmm huby is not going to be happy... another project. I just got him to install an electirec socket under the counter on my island bench, been asking for two years hahahaha. He's currently in the man cave welding some struts to his kerbside collection made go-kart. I have to cut some lawn out as we are making the back garden smaller so we could lay that turf under the wire, they can eat the grass but not dig to scotland :) win win

Thanks guys, always the one you REALLY want is the hard thing to earn hey. We will take the long road and keep a Blue Boy and grow our own next year.

Welcome Zerinala, you have made your own epic trip, sorry to have your last page on a bit of a downer.

We just got home from a kids party to find Rosie on the lawn with the two Rocks. She was out this earlier this morning with them, but she had trouble getting them back in the box when it started to rain. We watched her parenting from the sliding door, after she failed to get them up the ramp poor Rosie just sat on the chicks and was sheltering them from the rain out in the open, so I had to interfere and load everyone back in the shelter, then made a new ramp that is easier for the little ones to climb. Hope that solves the issue.

Pam, you are not wrong about the smell either. I meant to say the other day I noticed she smelt different. Yesterday she passed a pretty gnarly egg sized dropping just outside the doorway. I thought it was a dead mouse the start with! Things seem to be going back to normal. Still smells a bit different but not as strong as before.

I help my momma teach their chicks on occasion. Put them then on the ramp... almost to the top, so they see mama up there, clucking away, calling them, and they go in. If you put them to close to the bottom, they hop off and wail... if chicks wailed.. well, yes, chick wail. LOL. Anyway works everytime with the ones that don't get it the first time around with mama trying to get them up.
