Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

I have tried talking about a heap of chickenese recipes while walking around teh run in an effort to promote egg production. Didn't really work.

Been thinking of new ways to lure some golden yolked goodness from our younger girls. The time period 'any day now' is actually quite long hahahaha

After you have that figured out, can we work on that gold laying chicken please?

Not sure if I mentioned it earlier, but we have had issues with cats. Particularly an abandoned cat that old neighbors decided they would just 'set free' when they moved away.

I got two cages for free from curb side collection the other day and last night I decided to convert one into a trap. It worked and I caged the feral white cat often seen, heard and smelt in our yard and roof.

Last night I put some ads up on FB for anyone that might want to take it on, but this morning I asked ALicia to hose the cage while I held the cat, she then wanted to clean the cat....to which the cat had other ideas and promptly shredded my hand and arms until I let it go, only to watch it scamper off into my garage, with poop all over it's back legs and tail. Argh!

SO tonight will be take two at trapping it, then off to the local shelter and hopefully it finds a home.

I also think Sav's days may be numbered here too. He took a chunk from ALicia's toe the other afternoon which she was non too impressed about, and I heard a neighbor yelling 'shut up!' after he crowed this morning, so I think it may be time to get the camera out and place an add. Our hopes of some EE type crosses down the line are not looking too good.

Good luck with that cat!
Sav would have been in the soup pot if he had a chunk of any of mine!, he's lucky you have him and not me!

Send him on his way my friend!! I pray you didnt get it too bad!

She evaded me last night, smarter than she looks not falling for teh same trick twice hahaha

Same cage, new different bait (ham instead of polony) and the cage is in a new spot.

Bad news is the closest couple of Animal Protection SOciety places (shelters that have 'no kill' policies are over flowing, and won't take her when I do catch her again. So if I can't find a FB friend who wants a white female kitty, it will go to the council and most likely be euthanised.

In other news, zero eggs today. 'Any day now' is draging on some more. I thought I would have grown some patience by now with this first egg thing but I am nearly as bad as the first time we were waiting!

We had a neighbor that moved away 6-8 months ago, they owned it and left it behind when they moved. I double checked it was not someone elses by asking all the neighbours and none of them won a all white cat.

I don't think I called it feral, I did say it was abandoned, but it is surviving wild. A close by neighbour is is so much dislike of the animal he wants to catch and terminate, so I am hoping to beat him to it and get it a new home. It's not going to be easy though as there are so many cats already out an about. Harder to give away than a rooster!

That cool, I'm a cat lover, but I'm not fond of ferals. Our neighbour feeds one that was born in the wild , had little or no contact with humans and he made the mistake of patting it. He ended up in hospital with an infection in the wound. So I was more concerned about your lovely boys than your chooks.
On the egg thing, my Wyandotte are finally laying and the coro's have gone back on the lay. I have plenty of people wanting eggs , which I thought was a bit odd for this time of the year. But that's ok , it will pay for my winter feed.
