Our Journey into chicks

You can raise them alone if you have to. But they are MUCH happier if they have at least 1 pal. Otherwise they can get very lonely. If you are able to get another chick about the same age, I'd definitely recommend that.

I've called everywhere looking for chicks and no one around here has any. I found a lady about 2 hours away that has day old Olive Eggers, and she is gonna give me one. So we are about to take a road trip.

I would recommend that if you are going to keep her/him and you have the ability to buy it a friend, do it!! LOL My little (girl, I think) was our only surviving hatch for our first incubation attempt last month. I LOVE her to death, but she is spoiled and wants to be out with us all the time. When she has to go back in her cage and at bed time, she gets very upset!! It takes anywhere from between an hour to two before she will settle down and be quiet (and she is loud) so we can all go to sleep. I even put a blanket up over the front of the cage. I had put a mirror and a stuffed toy in there, but she still wants real company. I think if she had another chick at hatch time she wouldn't be as dependent on us for company. She's 4 1/2 weeks now and this just started about 4-5 nights ago. Because we live in Northern NY and have awful winters she will be housed inside till spring then we have a nice big shed we are clearing out to revamp into the chicken coop, but I have a feeling it's going to be a long winter...lol. We did set another batch in the bator night before last for a second try, but even then we've got at least a month and a halfish before I'd be comfortable mixing them.

I started with five eggs and only two were fertilized. And they both turned out to be ducks!! Sigh I'm glad they both hatched though so they arnt lonely. I would definitely drive to buy a buddy.

Yay! So glad you found it a friend. It'll be a much happier baby with company. And I LOVE OE's such pretty eggs.

Awww. Glad you got another one so they aren't lonely. They are so dang cute. I just love ducklings. No matter how bad I feel if I watch ducklings even for a minute, they make me smile and laugh. That adorable little ducky side head tilt makes me melt.

I just took another look and it appears I actually have a Roo. Those ducks sure are cute.
Are you feather sexing? If so, are you sure it is a breed that is feather sexable? Only certain breeds can be reliably feather sexed.
