Our Journey into chicks

Yikes! 6 degrees? That's a lot. Was it the thermometer that came in the 'bator? I've read a lot of people saying those are often completely unreliable. You'd think that incubator manufacturers would have a bit more interest in making sure they were at least somewhat accurate. I mean, why even bother including a thermometer on them at all, if they just put in ones that can mess up people's hatches so badly? It fairly boggles the mind.

No, it wasn't. My sister has lent us her incubator and it didn't have a working thermostat so I went and bought one at Aubuchon hardware that had a thermometer and hydrometer Springfield Comfort monitor. When we locked them down at day 18 I thought they looked a couple days delayed, but I was hoping it was just inexperience and I was wrong. I wasn't. Before we set this batch of eggs I bought two digital, One has a wireless outdoor monitor as well. I put all four in there during my set up and trial run and the three new ones are w/in 8 tenths of a degree. and all were reading 6-7 degrees higher than the one I previous used. I figured with it being brand new it couldn't be that far off, right? I guess I got my answer. I will never rely on just one thermometer for incubating ever again!

The thermometer we got with our little giant was dead on. I tested it with both my thermostats as well as another thermometer. It was a couple degrees difference from on top of eggs to the floor of the incubator. But it did fine. I will crack open the eggs Tuesday on trash day and see what's inside.

Just autopsied the last 3 eggs. 2 fully formed dead chicks in 2 of them and 1 I didn't open all the way. A yellow fluid started coming out as soon as I cracked it open and stunk like infected puss..

But... The saga continues. Cleaned the bator and have place 43 quail eggs. 8 Bob Whites and the rest are a combination of Texas A&M whites and browns. Heading to the quail threads to figure out what I'm doing.

This might be a silly question, but I thought I researched this pretty well. I had read that after the chick went into the brooder, they would stay there until they were ready for the pen in 2 months. At 10 days old, it is incredible how fast they grow. Seems they will out grow the brooder, long before 2 months. What am I missing? Do I need to build an in between pen of some sort?

That is usually what I do. I have a small brooder that they go into for the first couple weeks. After that they go outside, with a small run they can't escape from and a shelter with their heat lamp to warm up and escape from any drafts whenever they feel the need.

Could you post a pic of your in between brooder. I'm all set to start on my coop, but now I'm at a loss. Wasn't prepared for this. :)

I'm sorry but I can't. I don't have one right now. It changes depending on the spaces I have available, how many chicks I have, the season/weather at the time, etc. I've made temp runs out of dog crate panels, chicken wire, larger hole hardware cloth, plywood, etc. For the shelter I've used large plastic dog crates, large cardboard boxes (only when fully enclosed in the run), pallets, a small corner room in the shed with a doggie door, and a sectioned off area of the coop/barn. You can use whatever you can think up as long as it meets 3 criteria - enough space for the chicks to live harmoniously until their coop is complete; protection from things that want to eat the chicks; and a sheltered area where they can be dry and away from wind and their heat lamp can be safely installed while they still need it.
