Our Maine Duck House

Your place is gorgeous.

Ducks have a nice thick layer of down under those feathers. Ever slept under a down comforter or worn a down vest or jacket? Nice and cozy. They need protection for the winter wind and snow and ice but they are a hardy group of birds. Good ventilation is a must.

The ducks are most excited about having a partial pond view. ;-)

I do know they are hardy creatures in the cold, but I have heard from some duck keepers that insulation (and ventilation!) is still a good idea in Maine. We're still undecided but leaning toward no insulation. Thanks!

looks awesome, i think your ducks are going to be spoiled with that house)

for the insulation topic, am not much help as am in Canada (western Canada, Sask to be more exact) so we can get down to -40C (last year the coldest was -56F) so i insulated my coop for the ducks/geese (getting them soon like fall).

UPDATE: Yesterday we started raising the walls for the attached run:

Did you ever read the book The Little Red Lighthouse? Our duck house is the lighthouse and our barn is the GWB. :)

While we worked on the duck house, the silver Appleyards had a full day foraging in the garden. It was a good day in Midcoast Maine!
