You boil them first. Sometimes a bit of the color can seep through the shell onto the egg, but it doesn't effect the flavor! You should try it, it's really fun! You can get creative and do more than one color on the eggs too!
That's fun!Long ago we did not have access to food color. Mom would boil eggs in water that had onion skins. Just the thin outside skin from yellow onions. We did not have other colors of onions also. She saved the skins for a while, since with the skin removed, onion needed to be used. Did this only for Easter.
Eggs came out a nice yellow color.

Beautiful eggs!Anyone ready to hunt Easter eggs? You don't even have to color these! All but one of these are from today, I added the brown freckled egg on the right hand side is from yesterdays collection, because it's just so pretty! Pearl one of my EE's has finally started laying again. Her eggs are more green in color than Penny's eggs. This is the first time she's laid an egg since she was sick with Coccidiosis, I'm so happy as I feel like she is fully healed now!
