I also like buying my chicks because they are usually vaccinated...

That's one thing that has me nervous about the Legbars that I'm getting, I doubt that they are vaccinated. Coccidiosis is easy to combat with medicated feed, but I don't know what to do about Marek's.

My whole flock except Little Roo are vaccinated. The reason for that is, I believe he was the extra chick they gave me and I don't think they vaccinated him. Since I had them all vaccinated I wasn't giving them medicated feed, he's the only one that got sick with coccidiosis. So he probably isn't vaccinated for Marek's either.

I think that’s wrong! If they send you a chick it should be vacated along with all the others! That’s crazy!

I don't have proof of that, but it's the conclusion I came too, because I was so confused as to why he might have gotten coccidiosis!

I would ask the source if they have Mareks present in their flock. That is one disease that you don't want to have present. It is a form of herpes, and stays on your grounds like forever. Well, not forever, but is hard to get rid of once present.
I can direct you to some threads I follow on the subject of Mareks, or you can easily find them on BYC also.
Bottom line.... Its not the Apocalypse,,, but much better to avoid if possible.

Therefore, although immunization of chickens with live Eimeria oocysts is effective and has been the basis of live oral coccidiosis vaccines for almost 70 years, chickens must be vaccinated with oocysts from each Eimeria species in order to be fully protected.

Lil Extra Roomay have gotten a bug that was outside of the range of those that vaccine protects against.
Similar to us getting a flu shot. It only protects against the most predicted strains (I think 5 or 6 strains) that the Medical World assumes will be active in the coming flu season.
I'm pretty confident Lil Roo would have gotten the mareks vaccine if he was shipped to household that ordered vaccinated chicks. JMO.

Thank you, this is such great information Cavey & definitely makes sense! If I order from an online hatchery again, I don't know if I would pay for the coccidiosis vaccine. I spoke with them when roo got sick & they told me if I were to treat the whole flock that it would destroy the vaccine they were given. I would for sure vaccinate for Marek's.
I will have my friend ask the breeder, hopefully he will be honest about it. I don't know him. How soon would it show up? My friend bought Marans chicks from him.

I am strongly leaning towards rehoming him... I would rather not hatch as I don’t want to chance anymore roosters... while I find hen and her chicks Oh So Precious.. I hate the part where mother turns on them!

It is hard to watch them push the littles out. I get that.
