Our neighbor complained about us.

Gimme their number. I'll call and say I am considering moving to the area and want to have animals and need the codes. I'm in Nebraska, so they'll never associate it with you.

Actually, they can, and do! It's more about the interpretation of the law, rather than what it actually says. It clearly says no male goats, so they could argue that it implies female goats also. If they get an animal control officer that decides he needs a nice goat at his place, then, they could confiscate the animal. Unfortunately, it can and does happen.

I wouldn't contact them. Maybe have a friend contact them, maybe even record it, (and get a name) and ask about livestock rules for the city you live in. This is dangerous territory and I would hate to see you lose your chickens and goat.

Good Luck!

be aware of when the code specifies items.. If you already had goats before the code was modified, you could be "grandfathered" in..

do not give your friendly neighbors anyreal grounds for any complaint..

and above all, do not confront those neighbors, about anything..

Your hunch may be wrong and it just might be somebody else..

I can't imagine the code has been changed since I printed it out upon bringing our goats home (only a month ago). I do wonder if there is some code somewhere else that prohibits us from having them, though I did read all the code that is available online. I will have a friend call today and ask about the legality of it and where I can find the appropriate code. If they try to interpret the law that says male goats to mean all goats, we would definitely fight that. Thanks for all the advice and I will let you all know what my friend finds out when she calls.

That is my point it may be listed as a prohibeted pet, but not mentioned as a livestock etc, the rooster may be listed as prohibeted as a noise nuisance, under same law as playing stereo at 2 am. Prohibeted things can be hidden in other laws, just because they seem ok at first look.

Edited to make Prohibetted spelled the same it may be wrong, but its wrong the same each time. (-1SP)

I also think that if they said MALE goat that it has no implication to female goats.. Otherwise why would they specify?? even a bad attorney could blow that one out of the water..

If it comes down to where they are going to come and ake you animals
run, don't walk, to the news medias
and get as much publicity as you can. many humane socities are beggar funded.. there will be enough people backing you who will not donate that it might just change their minds..

Your best offense is to hit them in their pocket book$..

Well, my friend tried to reach an actual person a couple times today and ask our questions, but she could never get through. She said she will try again tomorrow.

Marlinchaser, I agree that it could be elsewhere in the code that doesn't seem obvious, but I have read over all the code that is available online and didn't see it anywhere. I certainly could have missed it, or perhaps it is in a section not available online. I sure hope not though.

Jvls, I agree about the "male goats" part. If they try and make that stick, I just don't think it will work. In the same section it lists "Swine", which to me, means all pigs. If they wanted to disallow all goats, I would think they would have just said "Goats".

If you get to keep them you should move the chicken's and goat's pen to the south side where the neighbor's can enjoy your beautiful animals.

I agree with the papertrail idea. Take pictures of everything - show how and where they live - use a camera with dates on it, maybe take a picture of the area once a week for the next six months so they can see it is kept clean. When you clean out the coop/shed document that as well.

Even if they decide that it is goats or all chickens, it might help them make an exception for you if you can prove you are a responsible owner.

Pictures with the kids interacting with the animals - displaying their 'petness' can't hurt either.

You might only be dealing with someone who is friends with the complaintant, works for the town and is trying to scare you into getting rid of your animals, not knowing you read the laws. We have folks like that around here who think they have more power than they actually do.

Do your homework and even if there are problems, you are ready to start the fight to get them legal.
