Our pup is chewing us out of house and home....

Thank you! I am looking into crate training...never had this issue before so I am not up to speed. We have lots of chewies and she loves them, but they don't deter the chewing on other things. She is at the vet today being spayed

so I have a few days to get a plan. She is such a good dog otherwise! Getting rid of her is not an option.

I appreciate your comments!

All good suggestions, but so is adding Fooey! Its a spray on that tastes so nasty that even dogs won't eat it.

We had a chewer and we tried crate training - she chewed the crate until her gums bled. We had to deal with the Fooey for about a week and later again for things like keeping her out of the trash. We had tried cayenne and hot pepper juice - she liked it!!

But Fooey stopped her from chewing her crate and everything else until her teething passed.

Does she chew when you are home or when you are out? Crating her, when you are out is an extremely good suggestion. Make the crate "hers" and a fun place for her to be. Once she is older this behavior should stop and you may not need the crate. But for now, she is in the chewing stage and like you said, nothing is safe. They also make a spray that you can spray on things to deter chewing. I had to use this on my dining room table legs where my puppy thought was a good idea to chew. Also a very loud "NO!" if you catch her chewing.

My Black lab was terrible @ chewing stuff...I mean he ate my son's matress, a wall...yes he chewed a huge gap on the wall....we ended up crate training him..I was agaist it initially...but we had to do something....he is now 6 and LOVES his create....we no longer have to lock him in it, but that is where he sleeps at night and naps during the day...

2 words - crate trining. All of our dogs have been crate trained. How long? Depends upon the dog. Rhon, a GSD, could be trusted in the house from the time that he was 10 wks. old - he was an exception. Livvie, a golden, redesigned a dining room chair at 9 months - tried to tell the Princess it was too early to allow unrestricted freedom. The others, mini poodle, Malamute/GSD X, 3 goldens could be trusted in the house anywhere from 6 mo. to 18 m. old.

i agree that crate training is the way to go but in case youve ever thought about sueing a chew deterrant DONT atleast not those bitter sprays and lotions i am 100 percent against those as ingesting too much can cause a puppy to get very very sick i used one reccomended by my vet my puppy ate it anyways didnt care and one time even grabbed the bottle and swolled about a dime sized portion fo the lotion kind after a few hours he became lethargic, and had explosive watery poos he couldnt stop jsut eevrywhere he started shaking and became very dehydrated i freaked out that he was going die and he was about 35 pounds at the time not a tiny dog! he recoverd but i vowed to NEVER use the bitter stuff again! so i decided to make my own
get yourself a small spray bottle i sued a old body spray bottle and washed it VERY VERY well untill all perfume smell was gone then adding about a teaspoon of peppermint extract to 1/3 cup of water mixed them in the bottle and sprayed it into my pups mouth he HATED it! he shook his head and drooled a bit it worked and even if you unload the entire bottle into there mouths they wont get sick!
when ever he would chew somthing i didnt want him to i would say "uhuh" or "no" if he kept chewing i would spray into his mouth he would drop the toy and shake his head once the taste was out of his mouth i would hand him a chew toy and priase him for chewing the toy it worked beautifully! and has worked for many other puppys ive worked with! with no ill effects if your puppy doesnt respond to that amount of peppermint and water combo you might need to add a bit more peppermint add the peppermint slowly its very easy to go overboard with it and you dont want that at all becuase the peppermint at too high of a dose can sting the mouth severly just from teh high concentration (trust me ive tried it in my own mouth) you can taste the mix yourself if you like you want it to be strong almost over powering strong but not painfully tingly. yes your dog will droll all over ebcuase there trying to get it out of there mouths dont worry about it like i said so long as youve tried it and you know its not severly tingly you know hes alright.

Let me preface this by saying IT WILL STAIN!!! Mix equal parts, Cayenne Pepper, Tabasco Sauce, and Lemon juice. DO NOT RUB GET THIS STUFF IN YOUR EYES! Brush on anything and everything the dog is chewing on in a thick paste. When the dog starts biting this stuff will bite back.

I love heavy duty rawhide chews. We have a Dane and a Standard Poodle. I buy them the femur sized bones. Whenever the pup starts chewing something else, replace the item with the rawhide. When you can't supervise the pup - keep her crated. You may also want to keep her on a long line where you're out with her so you can correct her without having to actually walk over to her. I'll wiggle the long line to get her attention, and then call her away from whatever it is she's doing and reward with the rawhide. You may want to teach a really good "leave it / don't touch'.

Hope that helps. PM me if you want to.

I agree whole-heartedly. It's not cruel. It may make you sad to do it, but it's better than getting rid of the pup.

i also agree with crate training....i used it with the family dog and my dog, i know it sounds mean but it's not.

okay so this is what i did its prolly teething?
whitey my pup what chewing on everything what i noticed he was chewing i boiled some hot peppers in water and sprayed it on the things he was chewing on i couldnt be just once it had to be a lots but sooner or later he learned i chew on that my mouth burns so he quit.
kongs didnt work he didnt like them and being a boxer his long toung got all the peanut butter out of it before i could lock him in a crate
he is crate trained which he loves his crate he sleeps in it even when he not locked up.
so that something else id invest in.
