Our Welsummer's first egg! ...and a bit of a surprise...

So here is a better photo of her head - do her earlobes look white enough for her to be a brown leghorn? In other news, she's making a fuss about laying again right now so we'll see what colour this one comes out! Any bets? :)

Ooooo! It looks like she might be a welsummer! Here is a pic I took this arvo of the two eggs side by side - the one on the left is the first egg she laid yesterday, and the one on the right is the egg she laid today... see the speckles? Could that be her 'ink jets' adjusting themselves?

She looks to be a pure wellie and her earlobes are red. I hope her eggs get darker for you.

Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed for me! I had one of her eggs for breakfast this morning and you know what, I don't think I care about the colour anymore, it was delicious!!

I have a Welsummer hen who is 27 weeks and she hasn't laid yet either. She don't even like the roosters. She makes a lot of noise when they try to mate with her. Expecting an egg any time!

Can't add anything to your topic, but your hen is lovely! I am not at all familiar with the breed but maybe I should start learning! By the way, those are nice size eggs for a brand-new layer!

My Welsummer ( about 29 weeks old ) laid her first egg today. Yippee. It was palish tan in colour with a few speckles, and I didn't expect much else
for a first egg ( from articles I have read on here ) ... it was a bit like a slightly lighter Barnevelder egg. But SHE DID IT - at last. Has been hovering around for a couple of weeks making "I want to lay" noises , and squatting for anything that moves. I found a huge scooped out area of the straw last night, so am not surprised to see an egg this morning. So pleased. Now have 3 hens laying out of 4 - it is Autumn here ( Victoria, Australia ) so I have no idea how long we will get a good egg supply for - although they all moulted in the extremely hot summer we have just gone through, so perhaps they will go on for a little while longer - before starting up again in Spring. At least that's how I understand it all happens ? Being a newbie to chicken raising, I am not sure of anything much, except how to utterly spoil my girls. They are all darlings.

Cheers ...
