Is it normal for a pipped egg to take over 24 hours to make any progress? And what it the chick is alive in there but the egg smells really bad and the mama hen has pushed it aside...what is going on? Does the smell indicate something is wrong with baby chick?

Most eggs complete pipping within 4-12 hours, though some may take a day. But if the egg smells bad, then the chick has probably died and bacteria are multiplying. I would candle the egg and check for any signs of movement; if you see none, either open up the egg or throw it away. A bad egg will only cause problems with other healthy chicks.
