A lot of folks on here feed that way, the idea being that regardless if you have chicks, roosters, molters, retired layers, etc. in the flock, the feed is suitable for all of them. Whereas layer feed is really only intended for active/nearly mature layers.

Yes, exactly. Grower is safe for everybody. And as Excessive pointed out, if you provide crushed oyster shell in a separate container always available, the laying hens will help themselves to it as needed, so everyone will always get exactly what they need, and no more.
