Overstock Sale on 5-gallon Bucket Feeder Kit at Amazon, reduced 50% to $6.49!

I bought this kit on sale also. Now I’m looking for a small flat sided container like the one above. Homedepot wanted about $13 for a small bucket/lid. No thanks
Kitty litter comes in nice heavy duty square buckets. Have a cat or know anyone?

I have heard that sometimes restaurants and bakeries have lots of these plastic buckets that they toss out as trash. You might be able to ask around and see if you can pick up any for free. Some places, like our local bakery, sell a bucket and lid for $3.00, which is not free but still much cheaper than $13 at Home Depot.

BTW, I don't know what bucket you are looking at Home Depot, but I found this 5-gallon food safe bucket online at HD...

For a feeder, I have found the easy off lids to be better than the normal bucket lids which seal airtight but you need a hammer to take off. WalMart has the best price on those easy off lids where I live...

As I have previously mentioned, I get my 5-gallon buckets at Harbor Freight when they have a bucket sale weekend. As an Inside Track Club member, I usually get a free bucket with any purchase. If you are not a member, you could get a free bucket with a minimum purchase of around $25.00. Still a good deal if you buy items you will use.

Over the past year, I have picked up a dozen or so 5-gallon buckets at HF. I use them as feed storage for the chickens instead of keeping the feed in bags. The buckets with lids keep the mice out. Also, it's a lot easier for me to move around a 25 lb. 5-gallon bucket of feed then wrestling with a 50 or 100 lb. sack of chicken feed or corn seed.

Some people are concerned about getting only food safe 5-gallon buckets. I'm not that picky. I just want a clean bucket and that will be fine for me. Sometimes those food safe buckets cost 2X the price of a regular 5-gallon bucket at the same store.

Certainly, if you got a bucket from a restaurant or bakery, those should be food grade safe.

If you know anyone with multiple cats, then there are kitty litter buckets that work well.

Oops- @Debbie292d beat me to it. :)

I don't have cats. I have not even looked at kitty litter in many years. Are those kitty litter buckets safe for feed after you clean them out?

Many years ago, I got a bucket of kitty litter from someone who no longer had cats. I used the kitty litter as absorbent material to clean up gas and oil drippings under the cars in the garage. The kitty litter worked great for garage spill cleanups. At the time, kitty litter was much cheaper than buying garage cleanup materials. But that was many years ago and I don't know what current prices are.

EDIT: Answering my own question, I found this answer online...

Yup. The plastic itself is fine. Just give it a good cleaning. I'd be more concerned if it ever held toxic chemicals of any form, but clay, paper fibers and other such materials commonly used in cat litter aren't a problem.

Home Depot does have the 5 gallon buckets and lids cheaper than the smaller buckets. I thought that was backwards. The reason I want a smaller one is to fit inside the brooder box. I also bought a kit with watering cups.
