overweight 51 year old women built her own coop!

I'm drooling over the pics right now

Awesome job! I will be 5-0 this year, and am in the process of building my own coop also. No true building experience, and no help (I did purchase detailed plans though - not ready to wing it on total design just yet!) Isn't it amazing what we can do when we are determined?

I'm also managing this project like a sewing project. We go with what we know!

Great job - thank you SO MUCH for posting this. At this point in my project I needed a little boost! Here's my coop so far - 4 partial afternoons invested as of today, much of that spent studying power tools and pondering what to do next... lol

Flat Creek Farm's First Coop

Oh Flat Creek Farm I really like that!! You go girl!!! The only power tools I had was a drill a hand held jiz saw and I had to cut the 4 by 4's with a elect. saw you know with the circle blade LOL. That one is scary so I used it only on the 4 by 4s LOL. I did not have a level or square I did wing it. I saw a this old house show where they were puttin in cement and when they put the frame up they said if you meausre from the corner 3 foot one way and 4 foot the other then you measure acoss those to lines it should be 5 foot to be square. My hubby has a friend who is a expert in thing like this and he saw it when I was done. Said I was only off about 1/4 of a inch to be square. I felt like that was sucsess for me LOL OH if you saw the indain turquise (?) pain on the inside top its because mud dobbers won't build nests on that color. I don't know why but they don't. I saw that on a this old house when they were redoing a old TX farm house. Here I thought it was just a southwest color but it has a use to

who knew LOL

I don't know why quilters don't recognize how smart and dedicated they are. If you can do a quilt with four compasses on it and finish the thing you could rule the world as far as I'm concerned. Nice job on the coop. It looks really great and secure.

Ozarkquilter, it sounds like you really did well with keeping it square! I toss around the squares and levels, and try to pretend I know what I'm doing with them.. hehe. I am spoiled with all the power tools, but the circular saw and jigsaw make me nervous. I LOVE the miter saw. If you see more building projects in your future, I would highly recommend a miter saw. Makes cutting those 2x4's etc super quick and easy, and not so scary

Great info about the color choice & mud dauber nests. I think you've learned a bunch by watching This Old House!

Again, awesome job

What a FANTASTIC job!!! Way to go, girl!!!

I have built all my coops & pens by myself, using the wing-it make-it-up-as-you-go use-materials-found-in-discard-piles style of construction. There's no need to go coop-less just because someone else won't make it for you. Women, kids, even inexperienced men can learn to build coops.

Ozark quilter.... this coop is just absolutely fantastic!

What a gorgeous plan and what detail you put into it!
