owning chickens in a certain housing situation?

im sorry if this is in the wrong section, but im moving in the springtime into a apartment/rented out home with my fiance, my brother, and his girlfriend. for a long time i wanted to get chickens, but my mother (who is the sole reason im moving) refuses to let me have anypets. dispite me owning alot in the past and showing time after time how responsible i am.

now, hes the situation. im in college and my fiance lives in minnesota (im in pennsylvania going to penn state) shes moving here then in three years after college were gonna save up and move to minnesota, and then from there (after saving up) try to get a small farm.


which is my question. from the experience of other chicken owners here are there some apartments that allow pets such as chickens? my brother currently lives in a rented out house which allows pets. so i assume some things are alright but does anyone here rent a home and still own chickens?


i doubt i could own them till i get my own place but i was just curious as to whether or not its possible.

Is your mother also your landlord?

If not, it seems that rental property landlords might allow chickens - depends on the landlord. I'd look for a fairly rural or large-lot rental, preferably a single family house but a duplex or triplex might be possible depending on the other tenants. I owned a duplex and had chickens. I don't think I'd let tenants have a flock at the same time unless we managed them together as a single flock. If I had tenants who wanted chickens, I would try to work it out. But that's just me.

I did just rent an apartment in Salt Lake that the landlord will allow chickens - she even wrote it into the lease. Again, it's a small number of units on a large lot.

but anyway, were looking for a place thats affordable and perferably a single home type rental (like renting a house). animals are a must though because i have a rat, two golden geckos, and a leopard gecko. and my fiance has a cat.

im only looking at a few chickens, like two or four at the most. hopefully one or two that lay eggs to eat and maybe one or two as "pets" (i like silkies and buff orphington)

Chickens are social animals and I think you would be better off having at least three. You can work with the landlord prior to signing the lease about your chickens but most of them will NOT accept chickens except out in the country. Sometimes some of them would require a "pet" security deposit for all the animals you have.

Renting may be the thing to do since you two are not married. In case something went down, at least you are not stuck with a mortgage of the house when one has to leave. Unless the breadwinner can take on the payments himself without a problem with or without a partner. That is something look into.

When I had my parrots in the apartment, they were considered as "caged animals" and I never had to pay any pet deposit for them and they are way more destructive than chickens! Right now my chickens are indoor chickens, as long as the cage is cleaned everyday I haven't had any issues with odor or health problems. I'm looking at diapers for them (with leash attachments) so I can have them out inside. Right now the fenced in garden is the only "safe" spot for them to roam in, and it's mostly dead. I want to do more than have a chicken to hold in the house, they need to run and not just free in the bird room when though they love the parrot scraps!
