Oxine, anyone?

Thank you for elaining. Now, I need to go back to Amazon and order the activator... U ugh!

Lost a hen yesterday to a prolapsed vent that the others were apparently pecking at. Blood was dripping from her hind quarters. I cleaned her up, and gently pushed it in. It was a shredded mess. But lead to an impacted/sour crop and she died in my arms.

. Pretty sure it all started from an internal yeast infection. She also had just begun laying and every egg was HUGE and double Yorkers. My poor baby. I hope to meet her on Rain ow Bridge...

I think you're misunderstanding. You do "not" want to mix in the activator when treating or using around your birds.

Eggsoteric, no, I understand. I just digressed a bit. I just meant that after I treat the hens withOUT the activator, I'll need the activator to use when I disenfect the coop. If I'm misunderstanding that, PLEASE let me know. Activator and Oxine AH are on their way!! Hope it helps!!!!

Thank you.

PS - Will Oxine AH help my bird with respiratory that I believe is FUNGAL in nature??

I would not use the Activator at all. Here's a good article on the use of Oxine AH.

http://www.shagbarkbantams.com/oxine.htm

I have successfully treated a bird with a suspected fungal infection using a cool mist vaporizer and non-activated Oxine AH.

I know some folks use non-activated Oxine AH to disinfect, however, I prefer to use a DuPont product by the name of Virkon-S when I want to disinfect.

Eggsoteric, thank you so much for the link re the use of Oxine AH. I will certainly follow the advice therein. I've been reading your posts for the past 6+ months, and value your opinion. Thanks again! I am totally new to the whole chicken raising ordeal; but love it and my little chicks!! Who would have thought??

So, read the whole thread, read the manufactures info. bought the oxine-no Activator.
Here's the problem:
We realized there was always this wet spot 12 feet behind the barn, on what turns out to be the neighbors property. The health dept came 3/13, yes, it's sewer and not on our property. They told her to fix it, we re-fenced our line so she could. When we kept getting sick every time we worked in the barn we decided to find out when it was re-inspected to see if it was failing again. Yes, you guessed right, never done. I bought the oxine to use now to lower the exposure to the raw sewage as much as possible-
1. Can I use a cool mist humidifer or do I need to get a stream vaporizer?.
We are planning this spring-- to do a total clean out, wash down, pressure wash the barn outside-soap and a little bleach-outside only-, dry out and oxine, will probable take 2 days--
2. but with this problem should I use activated oxine?
3. How long before I can re-introduce the birds? hours or the next day?
4. I'm thinking activated because that's the -only?- form to kill viruses?
I can re-introduce dirt to the floor to get my deep litter restarted. Any observation would be helpful. we do have a respirator but have to get a suit.

I'm wondering if a few drops could be put in the humidifier in the house to keep bacteria down. What do you think?

We have add drops to our humidifier.

I have been doing it and haven't noticed any odor or issues with my breathing or the cats. So I'll keep on doing it I guess. Glad to hear someone else uses it in their humidifier. Thanx.

I know this thread is a few weeks old but I just discovered Oxine and am unclear as to how much to dilute to spray over my chickens. I also have a hen with respiratory issues and just bought a nebulizer. I'm going to put her in a clear plastic tote and cut a hole in it to put the nebulizer in and run it. For the nebulizer I'm going to put 2-1/2 teaspoons per 1 cup of water. Does that sound right ??
