Oxycodone? No thanks!

Before I begin, I respect everyone's decision to take or not take any medication. I myself don't take even asprin unless I'm in so much pain I can't function.

My husband has been taking oxycodone daily for more than 4 years. He was in an accident and broke his back. Five surgeries, 16 screws, 2 large rods, 2 cross bars, 2 hooks and a bone growth stimulator later he is living with chronic pain. He sees his pain management specialist twice a month for injections of a local pain medication (either lidocane or a steroid) and gets prescriptions every other visit. When he started taking oxycodone he was given 10 mg tablets and within minutes of taking the first tablet he was vomiting. The doctor said to take half or even a quarter of a tablet to see if he tollerated it better. Now, he takes 30 mg tablets up to 4 times a day as needed for pain. He also takes 10 mg tablets of methadone every 8 hours as a maintenance medication. The methadone was added so that he could cut down on the amount of oxycodone he was taking. At one point he was taking oxycodone 2 at a time several times a day. Most of the time he only needs 1 or 2 oxycodone a day now. He gets absolutely no euphoric feelings from them.
Wayne has tried other pain meds--one was in the form of a lollipop, but we were afraid our granddaughters would find them accidentally so we decided against them--but they each had their own drawbacks. Oxycodone works for now...

I won't lie to you... I hate those pills. I used to be afraid he would accidentally take too many and I would find him dead one day. They do have a true benefit when used as prescribed and under close supervision of a doctor, but people who don't follow the directions or use them recreationally are playing with their lives.

Tylenor works fine for me most of the time.

Lost my brother to that drug.

I didn't know that Oxycodone was like percocet? Did I read that correctly? My mother was very, very addicted to pain medicine. She did have really horrible migraine headaches that lasted several days, so I understand how she originally got hooked.

Sorry can't remember the poster's name, but the post about filling a hole in your life probably fit my mom. She had a very sad childhood and I can remember days when she would say that she just wanted to lie in bed all day with the covers over her head. So, I imagine being drugged all day was her way of coping. She needed mental help but she would not talk honestly with a psychiatrist about her problems.

She was a doctor hopper also.

Her liver was shot from all that medication.

Deb1~ Sorry to hear about your Mom. Like I said in an earlier post, until that hole in the person soul gets filled with what they need they can never be well and live life happy like the rest of society and most don't even know what they really truly need to mend that hole. Oxycodone is not LIKE percocet...it IS percocet. When they bind Oxycodone with acetaminophen you get Percocet. You get Oxycontin when they bind oxycodone with inert ingredients. (whatever the heck inert ingredients are)

You might want to go back to the doctor and ask if they have a topical that you can put on before flusing the wound. It will hurt a little, numb the area and then you can flush it without pain. Most are short acting but you chould have enough time to do what you need to.

It seems strange that a doctor would give you something that powerful and long acting for flushing out a cut.

Good luck getting better.

Honestly, it's much better. It's starting to granulate in and I'm able to flush it without too much discomfort, so, I'm going cold turkey

We have lidocaine jelly at work for basically the same thing, and it occurred to me that he could have prescribed something like that instead. Oh, well. Live and learn. I now have about 19, extremely heavy duty, mind-altering pain pills, should I ever need them.

I got demerol before I had an emergency appendectomy. My but that stuff is weird. I distinctly remember saying some loopy things, moaning about how long it was taking for the surgeon to come 15 miles and feeling very strange. What I thought was totally weird was that I could still feel thepain, but I just didn't care. The percocet I got after surgery got used for migraines, 'cause they hurt lots worse.

I don't know how someone would want to take those sorts of things recreationally.

Taking anything with soda will make it hit you WAY faster. Anything with carbonation, sugar, or alcohol is quickly absorbed in the stomach. Champagne has all three. Of course you wouldn't take any medicine with alcohol. (please)

... I could still feel thepain, but I just didn't care....

yeah, me too... that was a real revelation to me as a new nurse when I took half of one of my grama's hydromorphone (dilaudid) for my first sinus infection. Worst pain I ever had but I could laugh about it.
One cool thing about appendicitis (if you have to have it) is that sometimes patients in the recovery room after surgery have zero pain. I guess because that bad appendix is gone and there's local anesthesia at the site. Same with hip pinnings; the bone is lined up again and the muscles aren't in spasm trying in vain to pull them back into place.

Also, I was thinking the Pharmacist said no more than 8 a day because of the Tylenol content... which is in Percocet but not Oxycontin. More than 4 grams of Tylenol in 24 hours can trash your liver and/or kidneys. Anyone with a history of Hepatitis C shouldn't have any at all. People were dying so they have to make sure anyone getting it knows to watch for it in cold or other combo meds they might take in the same 24 hours. Sorry for the soapbox talk but this is important to know.

I'm surprised he gave it to you for wound irrigation. Maybe he thought he was being nice. Some people come in for surgery and say that's the only thing that works for them. It requires a triplicate prescription, which some Drs don't have and most do not carry around, so it's harder to get...for good reason. But to folks with chronic pain anything less is about as effective as water. I'm sure there are abusers out there but hopefully few.

I hope it heals ok and doesn't hurt too much. I like the post on saline soaks... if you have grapefruit seed extract you could add a drop to the soak. Good luck!

Hope you are feeling better.

The only pain I have ever felt was childbirth & I took nothing for that. Nada. I am sharing that info because I have to say that "people" (me included) shy away from pain relievers because we know junkie-pill popper types. Folks : there is a legitimate need for these meds! I know someone in the medical field that tellls of getting cornered by the family of a 93 y.o. patient. "Doctor," says the son, "We don't want you to give Mom any pain-killers; we are afraid she'll get hooked." Hooked!??? Like knocking over gas stations "hooked." So silly. The woman was dying & could use medical help for her pain... IMHO.
