Oxytetracycline dose (tbsp / tsp)

The dosage of 1/8 tsp in a gallon of water is way too low. If you look above you will see that the company replied to Linda that:

400mg dosage is 1 and ¼ level tablespoons per gallon of water.
800mg dosage is 2 and ½ level tablespoons per gallon of water.

Antibiotics diluted in water are supposed to be the only drinking water available to the bird during the treatment. The bird drinks as much water as it requires during the day, and receives the right amount of antibiotic for their bodyweight. (The logic being that smaller birds drink a lot less per day than bigger birds.)

Is your rooster isolated, or with the rest of the flock? If he is on his own then you can treat him easily, but if he is in with other birds then you will have to treat the whole flock.

Actually, it is not. They made a serious error. I've called them and talked about it and I think the dosing info has been removed from their current brochure.

I will remix with the higher dosage. He is not isolated. I was going to give it to him with a syringe. I read you shouldn't eat the eggs from the hens if they are on the antibiotic. That is why I was trying to only treat him.

@KayTee , there are ~20 tablespoons of powder in the package of oxytetracycline 10 and the package is supposed to make 12.5 gallons. Double check my math, but I think you'll find that there is no possible way for the 800mg dose to be 2.5 tablespoons.

Same company also claims that one tablespoon = 2 ounces, so someone there really should proof their data sheets a little better.

Thank you so much. I've been worried about him. I took him to the vet & they wanted to put him under antistegia & do a scope. I wasn't comfortable with that. I'm doing everything possible to keep them all happy & healthy.

For those that have used 2.5 tablespoons per gallon, don't worry, it's only 1237.5mg, so not likely to hurt them.

Oxytetracycline 37%

This package weighs 280 grams
Package contains 102.4 grams oxytetracycline

102.4 / 280 = 0.37 , which means that it's 37% oxytetracycline and 63% filler
370 mg per gram
One teaspoon probably weighs 3 grams, so it's 3 x 370mg = 1110 mg per teaspoon
The 800 mg dose for one gallon = ~3/4 teaspoons

Oxytetracycline - 343 - 76%

102.4 / 135.5 = 0.76 , which means that it's 76% oxytetracycline and 24% filler
760 mg per gram
One teaspoon probably weighs 3 grams, so it's 3 x 760mg = 2280 mg per teaspoon
The 800 mg dose for one gallon = ~1/3 slightly rounded teaspoon
