Shell is cheap. I live on the Texas coast so can't I just crush it up and feed it to'em? Ditto clamshell?? If so; how fine should I crush it? I'm going on the premise that chickens need/love shell (calcium); am I missing something?

regards, and TIA

Layer feed should have all the calcium hens need for laying eggs with strong shells. But sometimes they need a little extra. Or some folks feed flock raiser due to multiple ages of birds or multiple kinds of birds. So extra calcium is needed. The stuff I buy is anywhere from powderish to maybe 1/4 inch pieces...so yeah, I don't see why you wouldn't just crush your own if it's available. It's pretty cheap to buy commerically though.
