packing peanuts question...

25 is not a magic number, but it is the number that most hatcheries feel comfortable with. Order 22, youʻll probably get 22 but order 17 and you are almost sure to get unwanted cockerels or "peanuts". Often they are meat breeds, so grow them out quick and plan a barbeque for 12 weeks from now.

Call the hatchery and ask them. I thought you had to buy the minimum number before they'd accept your order. I thought the packing peanuts were added if your order is above the minimum but less than enough to fill the box. Some hatcheries will honor your request if you do NOT want any extras. Some folks don't mind getting them, often they're roos worthy of a dinner invitation.

Most orders include them just in case of any problems, normally 25 is the comfortable number.

I ordered 12 Barr Rock Pullets from Ideal. Since my order was less than 25 they charged me a $7.00 small order fee. They put 7 RIR "packing peanuts" in with my shipment. I was sent a total of 19 chicks. Most of the RIR packing peanuts ended up being roosters. I'm going to put all the roosters in the freezer when they get to about 15 weeks or so.

ok if i order 28 houdans from cackle, you think there will be packing peanuts?

anyone know a magic number? id love to have packing peanuts... its like opening a cereal box and getting an extra prize! ahhaa

I ordered for Mt. Healthy here in Ohio last fall. 15 Goldend Comets I received 16 pullets in the order. I suppose it is different at every hatchery and temperture and distance my play a part in the peanuts. I just ordered from Ideal and will be receiving the chicks 3/4. I am now interested in how many I will get, I ordered 20.

I have been ording from Cackle for years. Never had any problem with them. I have always ordered 25 or more at a time. They have never sent "peanuts". They have instead sent 1 or 2 extra of the same breed that I ordered. This year is will be OEG bantams (crele) and some Marans. I can't wait.
