paint inside of coop?

The entire inside of my coop is painted. It will seal the wood, no nooks and crannies for lice/mites to hide in, which can help reduce issues from that. I used an exterior latex low vox paint. It has held up well, with touch ups on occasion, makes it easier to clean also, poop ends up everywhere eventually. If I were building a new coop, I would absolutely paint the inside.

You can get different opinions on this topic. I like that you are asking pros and cons so you can make up your own mind. With a dozen chickens I envision a decent sized walk-in coop. I did not paint mine. For what it is worth I have not had any mites in the ten years they have been in this one. When I was a kid Dad did have mites once, his coop was not painted inside either.

Con's

There is the cost of the paint and the time to put it on.

If it is painted you can probably see dirt, poop, and stain more readily than on raw wood once raw wood has aged a bit.

Pro's

You can clean it better painted rather than raw wood though you may still have a stain problem.

Some people just like it to be pretty inside as well as out.

Possibly some benefit for mites but in my opinion they can still find plenty of places to hide if they are present, like bedding. That's just my opinion.

Maybe pro/maybe con

Some people like a bright coop, I prefer mine darker inside. A light colored paint will make the inside a lot brighter but will likely show mess and stain worse. A darker color will hide stain and mess better and be more washable than raw wood.

I can't come up with anything else either way. Hopefully others can.

I painted the inside. What we did was just dump all the 1/2 full gallons of left over paint from painting bedrooms and such that accumulate and taking up space in the basement. It isn’t the greatest color turned out a brownish purple but free and got rid of the paint taking up room.

Excellent idea! We have a ton of paint left over from when we re-did the bedrooms in our house. Bunch of light blues and greens... might have to do this!

I can't think of any cons about interior painting ..
I vote for bright ..
white will show stains, but hey, it's a chicken coop, not a church ..
I would choose an exterior paint .
then you could go in and spray the walls with the garden hose about once a year..
you can get mites and fleas even with painted walls.
the most common breeding place for them is in a dirty nest.. keep the nests clean..

I can think of only cons:
Not really necessary,
costly,
time consuming,
mostly - I hate to paint.

If you are going to paint, do a good job and don't skimp.
Meticulous prep of surfaces, prime raw wood, use a good tough semi gloss paint.
Nothing worse than a lousy paint job that fails a couple years down the road.
