Our HD does not sell that barn productBarn and Fence Paint is not the same thing as "stain"
It comes in both oil based and acrylic based, and is cheaper than the stain you're referring to..
To use any type of stain, you need clean, BARE wood.

This is what Berh says about the stain that I have been using:
"To remove loose wood fibers, latex, oil-based and 100% Acrylic coatings on new or weathered wood decks, siding, fences, shakes and shingles use a product such as BEHR

No primer needed on most woods. However, Redwood, Cedar, Cypress and other “bleeding” woods contain water soluble extractives which may cause discoloration of white and pastel colors; therefore, prime the above type woods with one coat of a product such as BEHR

Because the wood is older and weathered it will be primed with a latex primer, the gloss paint would be scrapped, scuffed and and primed.
