Paint Question

Barn and Fence Paint is not the same thing as "stain"
It comes in both oil based and acrylic based, and is cheaper than the stain you're referring to..

To use any type of stain, you need clean, BARE wood.

Our HD does not sell that barn product

This is what Berh says about the stain that I have been using:

"To remove loose wood fibers, latex, oil-based and 100% Acrylic coatings on new or weathered wood decks, siding, fences, shakes and shingles use a product such as BEHR

NO. 64 PREMIUM STAIN & FINISH STRIPPER.

No primer needed on most woods. However, Redwood, Cedar, Cypress and other “bleeding” woods contain water soluble extractives which may cause discoloration of white and pastel colors; therefore, prime the above type woods with one coat of a product such as BEHR

EXTERIOR WATER-BASED ACRYLIC LATEX PRIMER & SEALER NO. 436. See label for additional instructions."

Because the wood is older and weathered it will be primed with a latex primer, the gloss paint would be scrapped, scuffed and and primed.

I used a red stain on the bare wood on my coop and want to use the same stain on my shed. The professional painter who was repainting the trim on my house said I could use the stain on the shed if I primed it first. I haven't done it yet; it's a springtime project so I can't say how it will turn out. I do plan to get some tinted primer and then try the stain on it.
