Paint Silkies ~ European Lines

Wow they are just such neat birds...the toe coloring reminds me of a paint horse as they often have white and black hooves so maybe the chickens will be the same...its the patching genetics...thanks for sharing your paint project with us here on BYC

I think of them as a loud paint or appaloosa horses. Same way when I started talking splits with the lavenders...that was peafowl talk and seemed to fit. If you have ever owned and dealt with peafowl, they always are "split" to something, making them much more than a mutt.

This is just for ME and certainly not saying it is the same genetic ideas.

We all need to take on the idea of enjoying this and not over reacting to others' likes dislikes and beliefs. From what I know...paints are still a mystery of sorts in Europe so to think WE can solve it over night is nuts. Again, just my thoughts on paints. Test breeding of 100 chicks is a good gage of what you can expect from any cross. Just keep good records and how your birds are breeding. The Texas birds are not practing "free love" but very controlled. I couldn't sort this out other wise.

Well, I know that one theory is a new (or previously undiscovered) mutation of dominant white. Could this perhaps be an entirely different gene? And I guess I would want to know more about patching on horses or other animals? In the next post both paints and appaloosa are mentioned, and while not mentioned, pinto is similar in that it is patched. Genetically how do these differ from each other, and what, is anything, are their alternate alleles?

Bren, are you using "Euro" blacks, or blacks from your regular flock?

No, I am using my own blacks. To start with that was all I had and using blacks from the paints might work even better but for now...using unrelated blacks that can not be possible carriers, if that is possible.

Results from last night to this morning...

5 paints out and well, 7 blacks out and well, one lavender showgirl...LOL You can see her naked neck in the top left corner.

I open all my eggs that don't pip when I am testing. I have four left one being a lavender showgirl. The other three eggs were two blacks and one paint.

yes...all of these are paint to unrelated black and ALL the light chicks are showing some degree of black/paint in their down right now. so this was 6 paints developing to pipping and 10 black. I also wonder about the few eggs that started developing but died early. I have a few of those and there is no way to tell the color even IF I tried. This successful hatch wasn't 50% but we are talking one batch I set. I will get a count of how many solid white I have in the total of chicks in my Hatch'in Hut. I think maybe about 24 and one may show only white right now. That is something else I need to be sure and track. Appearance at hatch and then when they start to mature.

If you don't mind me asking? Are you going to try breeding the black to each other and see what you get? What about the black back to paint and black to dominant and recessive white? I'm really interested in who carries what...
