What kind of paint/wood protector can I use on the coop. Something that won't get the birds sick should they eat it.

I use exterior paint on my coops. Modern paints are not toxic once cured. I haven't noticed mine eating the paint off of the surfaces.

They do seem to eat anything that they can get into their mouths: cast flower pot, shredded styro-foam insulation, wood chips, sawdust, nerf gun darts, but not paint.

I use Agricultural paint on the exterior. It's water-based, nontoxic, and you can get it fairly cheap in 5 gallon buckets.
On the interior I white wash.

It's supposed to be parasite resistant. The only thing is it's $12/gallon and I have a lot of walls to cover.
