So I have a lonely homing pigeon. Im going to buy him/her a mate soon but was just wondering, does the mate have to be the same breed? say could i buy a fantail as a partner or do i have to get another homer?

Any breed will do. Sometimes any sex will do. Pigeons are very adaptable.

I believe all breeds of pigeons do this, though some fly better than others. But you'd be better off just letting them out for a little while a day so the hawks don't get them.

How old was the homer when you got it?
You may want another homer, or some kind of flying breed. Like a roller for example. Other breeds are fine, but they may be a little slower if a hawk comes around. But of course if you keep an eye on them, they should be okay

I have some Satinette babies that should be weaned in the next couple weeks. They fly pretty well actually, even though they are used as droppers. When mine get excited, they'll make a lap or two with the homers.
