hello, i have a bantam that seems to be showing signs thats she is sick. Her tail is drooping, pale comb, and seems to be kind of like snorting for air and i can hear it. Im not sure if maybe it could be a respiratory infection. If so, what can i do to treat it?
Im really hoping she will be okay i have had her for about 5 years.

Do you notice any bubbles in either eye, continuous swallowing mucus that is coming down into her beak from her sinuses, head shaking to clear mucus, gasping, sneezing or crackles when she breathes? Respiratory symptoms can be from dust or other irritant, viruses, bacteria, or mold fungus. Look into her beak and throat with a light for any mucus, or any white to yellow cankers or gunk. Look for any mucus or dried food blocking nostrils. Since antibiotics would only treat bacterial infection, such as MG or coryza, make sure that ventilation is good. Try to get her drinking fluids and eating. Her tail being down could be related to a reproductive infection or disorder. Is her crop emptying overnight? What does her poop look like? Can you check her skin under her vent area and all over for any mites or lice?

yes i will check! just one thing should i be careful that i catch something from her when i inspect her? or do chicken sicknesses not transmit to humans?

so i checked everything and it seemed fine. her comb is still very pale shes lethargic but does join in with her hens sometimes. her poop is white and watery. i put garlic, apple cider vinegar, oregano oil and honey in their water incase its mabye a parasite or worm.

You won’t catch anything from her. Respiratory diseases are not normally zoonotic or transmitted from chickens to humans. But always wash your hands after handling your chickens. I would also provide some plain water in case she doesn’t like the water with the extras.

my hen is still looks very sick she sits alone for hours in one spot. I really don’t know what to do. Ive given her water with garlic, oregano oil and tumeric but she still seems very ill. i always have to make her drink and eat otherwise she won’t herself. im really scared she might die and the vet is not an option for me as i can’t really afford it. Her breathing seems normal now but shes just always fluffed up and sleeping

Have you tried an antibiotic yet? From your first post, it sounds like she might have had a respiratory infection.

I had a hen last summer that was sick and gave her amoxicillin twice a day for a week. She was better in a few days but I gave it to her for 7 days, then followed up with probiotics for a couple of weeks. If you don't have any or can't get it, Jedds.com and other places online sell it.

You might have to get more nourishment down her. I've got a blind pullet that I have to force feed these little balls I make from feed I grind in a coffee grinder with some Kaytee Exact (baby parrot food), a couple drops of Poultry Cell vitamins, and a whole raw egg. You could also break a yoke and syringe that to her. Try scrambling some eggs and see if she'd eat that on her own.

Syringes are inexpensive and your drug store should sell them. Look for ones that have the larger hole on the needle end. I got these on Amazon. Sometimes I just make a real sloppy mash with her feed, add some of that Kaytee to it and feed her that way. I just put that to her right side of her beak and she eats it. If she won't, here's how in case you'd want to try that. https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...dications-to-all-poultry-and-waterfowl.73335/

Did you check her eyes for bubbles or foam, or look into her beak with a light which was previously suggested? Does she have any lice or mites? Mites can make them anemic. Does she still lay eggs? Are you in Australia? You may not be able to get antibiotics for her there without a vet. I do think you can get Oxy Mav there, which is oxytetracycline. Hens her age might have reproductive disorders or cancer. Feel her crop in early morning to see if it is emptying overnight. Crops may not function well due to other problems. Most chickens will take some wet chicken feed, and a spoonful of plain yogurt with live cultures can give some probiotics. In AU you can buy Harkers Coxoid to treat for coccidiosis if that may be a problem. Worming her is also something to try, in case that is an issue. Wormout Gel, levamisole, or Panacur or SafeGuard horse wormer would work and may be available there.

thank you so much. i just gave her a bit of amoxcillin in a syringe and she took it normally. i checked her mouth eyes and nose and everything seems fine. her nose does got black on it but thats usually because they dig in the dirt alot and i also check her for mites almost everyday. i’m trying to encourage her to eat and drink which she does when i help her which is good. I do live in australia yes. I’ll definetly give her some yogurt thanks for the tip. If she does stay like this i’m thinking of buying her worming powder from a place we have called petbarn. I had a whole bottle of coccidia powder but i just can’t find it hopefully i will.
