Pallet Coop - The Beginning

This weekend we got everything in place. Posts burried about 2 feet and concrete in the bottom of the holes. I didn't get a picture last night but we got the plywood in place and secured to the subfloor. We have started to lay out framing for the walls. We had to purchase two 12 foot 2x6s and three sheets of plywood. Total cost is around $200 now.

Still haven't gotten out to get pictures of the floor. We have the plywood nailed in place. After reading recommendations here, we got Blackjack #57 to seal the floor before we start building the walls. I am curious if the underside will need to be sealed as well. Ventilation under the coop will be good but I am worried about moisture causing it to rot from the bottom. Any suggestions?

Sure do! Go and buy a remnant piece(s) of linoleum and lay that in there. Then I would suggest using washed, construction-grade sand on top of the linoleum about 3-6 inches thick or so. I'm using a 2x4 'gutter board' in front of the door to my coop so it doesn't spill out.

The nicest thing about using this as your 'floor' is that it absorbs moisture and you can make yourself a poop-rake of sorts and cleanup is sooo much easier...just my thoughts...best of luck whichever way you go!!

Blackjack #57 is a rubberized seal coat. It will be on the top of the plywood, so linoleum will not be needed but could be used as well. I meant underneath the coop. Not sure if I would need to get under neath and coat the underside of the plywood where it is connected to the joists.

Gosh, I wouldn't think so...

Got some pictures with plywood floor. Worked into the night and applied a few coats of blackjack #57.

The blackjack was very easy to apply. We used brushes attached to handles. Just hoping it doesn't rain tomorrow. ..

We ended up applying it to the 2x6 boards around the edge as well. I am very happy with how it came out. Can't wait to start on the walls.

Awesome. We are building our coop all out of free materials that my hubby brought home from work. All destined for the dumpster at one time. I'm sure it wont be as carefully constructed as yours, but we are eager to get it up and running. Between our work schedules and family obligations we have very little time to work on it.

My husband and I both work full time jobs and we have 3 kids. Finding time to work on it has been difficult but manageable. We have been working on it mainly on weekends. There have been a few evenings where we have traded off. One of us watches the kids while the other works on the coop. The kids really want to help also but with some things it just isn't possible. I am sure your coop will turn out just how you want. Good luck and I would love to see pics once you get started!
