I I work for a large home improvement store. (Lowes) I bought a remnant pi
ece of vinyl flooring; put it over my osb. Has worked great!
I am actually starting my THIRD coop today ; this is a pallet coop. If you check your
local Lowe's we ALWAYS have cull lumber for sale cheap ! I built a 8x8 coop with an 8x16 run for under 250.; including the shingles!

If you are getting young chicks I think your head height will be ok for the winter- I suspect tho that when your hens attain maturity you may have to raise it some. I have my coop up on 2 course of the 8x8x16 hollow cement block and my girls still have to duck under. I like to have raised structures so they have a dry place outside of the coop to hang out during storms .

6 feet of my run is going to be covered...actually a 6'x8' area will be covered, so they will have 48sq ft of covered run space. They will have about 6x8 uncovered as well. :)

Front wall is 49.5" high while back is 41" high now.

I like how yours is turning out. I was going to look for pallets, but I'm slowly, secretly taking apart my sons disaster of a play house my husband tried to make, without plans. So recycle is my game for now. Can't wait to see it finished. I've took over my husbands tools and power tools, which is driving him nuts. Also building mine is the garage, and than piece by piece will move, or drage it, it to the setting area.

Originally this was supposed to be built only of pallets...now with all the store wood I have bought...along with starting supplies and all that, by the time I get the chicks next week, those 6 are going to be worth a little more than $100 a piece!! Good thing I am flexible and love animals!

Getting the coop up. First pic of the day. Floor is down and level....front frame and one door frame secured together and screwed into the floor.

And then this afternoon framed the roof and used hurricane ties to secure.

Finally....I got the OSB on the roof and squared up and nailed down...and got one drip edge and 2 sheets of asphalt paper down. Tomorrow will finish the roof and get the brooder ready!
