PALLET COOP

Finally had some more time to work on the coop and run and put up some more pictures. Got the flooring put down in the coop and the roosts up. I used stringer steps that the home owner before me left and just put some 2x2's across them. I still need to give them a little sanding. I also put in a community nest box that i'll a curtain of some sort before I get the girls. My one concern is the slope seemed a lot more drastic when installing the nest box. I think I'm going to have to build up the front when I put in the carpet/turf/pad

This is a random picture of one of the windows I put in. The reason I took this is because I don't have electricity down here so I added this light switch. Harbor Freight had this on sale for 3.99 so I bought two. It's got a tape backing and is LED and battery operated. I figure when I need to go down during the night I can flip the switch and should suffice.Got one for each end of the coop

Last one for the night. This is just the back door and the ground is what I worked on today. I dug out around the coop and run and connected the apron cloth. I've connected everything but need to re-bury and grade the dirt on both inside and outside the run. Because I'm going down a hill the run horizontal base is elevated off the ground. I live on straight mountain rock so it's easy filler.

I have a month to finish up my to do list:
DIY waterer and feeder
sand roost
Put another roost/stringer steps in the run
install pallet compost bin at end of run
install chicken swing (b-day gift the wife- I think she's coming around to this idea haha)
buy and install nest box pads
plug holes in eves of roof
build ramp

You would not believe how much study has gone into making pallet nails resistant to pulling out of the runner. There has even been a university study to analyze the angle of the spiral flutes and the depth of the flutes to make them harder to pull out. Yes I used to work in a nail factory...

I never manage to pull pallets apart because of the nails. I always split the wood!

This coop is very good. You have used everything to hand repurposed all the materials and built a strong and sturdy coop. Are you going to paint it or treat it? I think the natural wood colour looks nice and blends nicely into the woods. Great job!

Thanks! I had planned on it but I kind of like the natural color. You also would only be able to see the nest box side from the road or house so to paint it, for me anyway, doesnt do much good. We'll see what the wife thinks. I want to treat some of the plywood I used to seal it up. Everything else is either pressure treated lumber or pallet boards which are treated. I figure I'll have to some of those boards every so often anyway.
