Jim, Thanks for the follow up info. for some reason I didn't get notified (?) by the system. It is very unsettling that there are so many hidden poisons that we are exposed to. I have re-purposed my pallets to become the equipment shed.........

As someone who gets a lot of deliveries on pallets everyday I can say that a majority of them are all heat treated now. I have made tons of tables, shelves, and other things with pallets. My two end tables and coffee table in my living room are made from pallet wood.

That being said, if you live near me I always have a bunch that you guys are welcome to come and get. I am now getting most of them that are made from hardwoods which when stained looks gorgeous. The boards are more narrow, but much better quality of wood.

I am a tire manufacturer and get my raw materials on pallets. I would ask local hardware stores, nurseries, warehouse stores, or anywhere that you see pallets lying around a business. Here there are tons of DIY landscape and rock places that always have piles of them. There are people in my area that collect pallets for resale, most companies, me included, give them to them for free just to haul them off.

A lot of places have to return them or pay for them and won't give them to you...or they hoard them for themselves....but some will, ya just gotta ask.

Exactly! That's how I get all of my recycled building material.

I collect pallets because "I might need the wood". My DH was getting so upset about it until he needed lumber for something and I tore a pallet apart and supplied him with it. He hasn't complained since. I've used them on rabbit hutches, chicken gates and plan to build a small Banty coop this Spring. Possibilities are endless. Happy building. I will continue to watch the progress of your coop.
