My ducklings are 4 weeks old (2 are 3 weeks) and I noticed today they seem sit with their mouths open. I took the heat lamp down thinking they were hot and noticed one or two are still doing it. Not sure if I should worry or it's normal? Thanks!

i would think its normal they are probably still recovering from the heat to cool them off you could put cold water under their wings and give them fresh cold water in their water holder nothing too serious it sounds like

I let them swim outside..of course it's hot outside too. Thanks! Just being paranoid :)

My 3 week old gosling was doing this the other day, after being outside[not in the sun] so i put him into a pool of water and he wash and stopped panting. Hopefully yours just got over heated. at 4 weeks they probably don't need the heat lamp anymore unless your in a part of the world where it's fall instead of winter.

Sometimes it's panting from the heat, and sometimes they have stuffed nostrils which forces them to breath through their mouth. If you have control over the temperature in the brooder and it doesn't get above 80-85 (edit, this still might be a bit warm if they don't have a cooler place to escape to), they should be comfortable temperature wise and not need to pant (unless there is also direct sunlight shining on them). If the temp is controlled, then it's probably clogged nostrils. Do they have continuous access to a water source deep enough to dip their heads into? This is very important for ducks so that they can clear their nostrils, rinse their bills, and wash their eyes to prevent infections.

Depending on the severity of the clogged-ness, you may need to take them swimming in warm-ish water... and make sure they have plenty of access to a "head washer." (You can look that up here on the forum to get some ideas. I used large yogurt containers, and now that my ducklings are grown into ducks, I use buckets.)

Here's a video of what it looked like when one of my ducklings had clogged nostrils and was mouth breathing.

She was not hot, her nose was clogged!
