Paper towels?

When I had chicks years ago, I remember keeping them on paper towels in the brooder the first few days. But I don’t remember when I switched plain pine shavings. Is there a proper time to do so? Thanks so much!

After the first few days, they have learned what stuff is food. Then you can switch to pine shavings whenever you want.

This is the advice I was given when I first got my chicks and it has worked very well for me thus far.

I do pine shavings right away and haven't had any issue. On a side note, I also like to give trace amounts of chick grit in their food. On the off chance that they eat the bedding, the grit will help them break it up and push it on through.
