How long should I keep the paper towels down on top of the pine shavings to prevent spraddle leg? A week or longer?

Paper towels cause spradle leg. The paper towels are so the chicks dont eat bedding instead of food. I take mine up after two days and they know what food is

I did paper towels under shavings the whole time. But I imagine if there would be spraddle leg it would show up within the first week. The paper towel was mostly then for hygienic and cleaning purposes changed every other or every 3 days for me.

I took the paper towels off the shavings the second day I had them (when they were 3 days old). No probs with them eating the shavings

We took the paper towels off when the chicks were 3 days old. They pick at the pine shavings but haven't seen any of them eating it, which I was worried about.
