Paralysis, green/white diarrhea, loss of appetite, sleepy

We have what we believe to be a leghorn hen. Roughly 6 months old.

It's been about a week now. She has no use in her legs. Is drinking water, but doesn't seem to have any interest in her food, seems alert, but is super clumsy, wobbly.

She's currently in the house, without any chip bedding, but with old blankets instead, because she was getting a sore on her breast bone from the way she was laying. Her feet look fine, no curling of the toes, no mites, scales all heathy and in tact.

Horrible smelling diarrhea, she seems sleepy. We've been having to give her baths, because it keeps getting stuck in her feather. Vent looks okay.. but nasty clump of what might have been a crushed egg in her feathers. We couldn't tell what it was.

She is unable to support herself at all.

Their coop is clean, fresh water everyday in a clean waterer. Food is sealed, and given fresh daily. Along with fresh fruits and veggies on occasion. She was to have been vaccinated before we got her. All other chickens are acting playful, healthy, and unaffected.

Seriously don't know what to do. Been giving vitamin supplement by dropper, encouraging eating, but she's not interested at all. I've researched the internet higg and low, but nothing seems for certain.. whether it's something she'll recover from, or that will kill her.

This particular chicken is my daughter's baby. She is named Marshmallow.. and my daughter is on vacation with her grandparents right now, and I've told her that she's sick.. but she will be crushed if Marshmallow doesn't make it. I have no idea what to do. Please help.

Hi @Kirsten Corrin Walshe Welcome To BYC:frow

I'm sorry you are having trouble.
Posting some photos of how she lays down or a video of how she tries to move would be good. Poop photos are always welcome too.

Is she laying eggs?
Any swelling of the abdomen?
Do you have vet care or at least have your vet test some of her poop ?

It's very hard to know what's going on. Paralysis, green poop and going off feed could be Marek's, but it could also be other things as well. Without testing, there's no way to know for sure.

Unfortunately, if it is Marek's, there not much that much more that you can do than you are already doing. Try to keep her hydrated, offer poultry vitamins containing B vitamins. See if you can entice her to eat with some egg, tuna or meat.

Since she is developing a breast blister, she may benefit by being placed in a sling - this will get her more upright and hopefully relieve some of the pressure on her breast.

fwiw- the Marek's vaccine only prevents the formation of tumors, it does not prevent infection by the virus.
